Chapter 6 - What Emma Heard

Elena wanted to leave the estate immediately.

Alejandro refused.

“The person who took those photographs knows your schedule, your car, and Emma’s school. The roads are less secure than this house.”

“This house is where someone tried to kill you.”

“And every gate is now guarded by people whose identities we have verified.”

“You trusted Sofia too.”

Alejandro did not have an answer for that.

Elena carried Emma to a guest bedroom adjoining the medical suite. The windows were reinforced, and two female guards remained outside the door.

Before Elena closed it, Emma reached toward Alejandro.

“You promised a story.”

“Tonight has already been a very long story.”

“But it doesn’t have an ending.”

Alejandro looked at her tired face.

“Not yet.”

Emma held up the stuffed rabbit.

“Bunny knows the middle.”

Matteo and Mara spent the next hour recovering files from the device inside the toy. Daniel Morales had built it using modified security hardware. The recorder activated only when it detected specific phrases.

Bad secret.

Foundation transfer.

St. Orison.

Moretti Trust.

The device had not been placed inside Emma’s toy by accident.

Daniel had wanted it near the Moretti family.

Elena sat across from Alejandro in the private medical suite.

“My husband was a mechanical engineer,” she said. “He built security systems for hotels and banks. Before he died, he was consulting for one of your foundation projects.”

“Which one?”

“He never told me.”

“Did he mention St. Orison?”

“No, but he became frightened during his final month. He checked the locks every night. He stopped using his regular phone. Once, I found him burning papers in the sink.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because three days later his car went off a bridge. The police said he fell asleep.”

Alejandro remembered attending Daniel’s funeral. He had stood beside Elena while she held two-year-old Emma in her arms. At the time, the crash had seemed tragic but ordinary.

Now nothing about it felt ordinary.

Mara recovered another file from the rabbit.

It was older than the study recording.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

“Elena, if you ever hear this, I am sorry. I thought I could prove what they were doing before they noticed me.”

Elena pressed both hands against her mouth.

The recording continued.

“The money is moving through children’s charities. St. Orison is only one name. There are others. Someone inside Moretti Foundation is creating medical projects that never open, shelters that never take residents, and schools that exist only in reports.”

Alejandro’s anger hardened.

The foundation had been created by his mother. It funded hospitals, food programs, scholarships, and emergency housing across three countries.

If Daniel was right, someone had turned it into a machine for theft.

“The records are protected by a system called the Red Archive,” Daniel said. “I copied part of the access map, but I could not open the final directory. It requires a physical key.”

A soft sound came through the recording.

Baby Emma laughing.

Daniel’s voice changed.

“If anything happens to me, the safest place is the one no one would search.”

The file ended.

Everyone looked at the stuffed bunny.

Matteo examined the device again.

“This recorder is not the physical key. It is only a transmitter.”

Mara rotated the black component beneath a camera.

“There may be another piece.”

Emma wandered into the room holding a cup of water.

She saw the open seam beneath the bunny’s paw.

“You broke him.”

“We are fixing him,” Matteo said.

“You opened the wrong foot.”

Matteo paused.

“What?”

Emma turned the toy over and pointed to the other paw.

“Daddy said never open that one unless the red door wakes up.”

A tiny metal shape was hidden beneath the fabric.

Matteo carefully removed it.

It looked like a child’s plastic heart, but a narrow electronic strip ran along one side.

Mara stared at it through the video call.

“That is a hardware authentication key.”

Alejandro leaned forward.

“For what?”

Before Mara could answer, an alarm sounded in the guest bedroom.

A guard shouted Emma’s name.

Alejandro rushed through the adjoining door.

The window was still closed.

The guards were still outside.

But someone wearing a medical uniform was standing beside Emma’s bed, reaching for the rabbit backpack.
