Chapter 15 - The Knock Behind the Red Door

No one moved.

The sound came again.

A heavy mechanical shift behind the wall.

Matteo drew his weapon.

“Everyone step away from the bookshelf.”

Alejandro guided Emma and Elena toward the doorway. Mara disconnected her computer from the estate network.

A narrow red line appeared between two wooden panels.

The north bookshelf separated from the wall and moved silently to one side.

Behind it stood a steel door.

It was painted dark red.

Unlike the archive door beneath the foundation headquarters, this one had no visible handle. A circular panel at its center contained two narrow spaces.

One shaped like Daniel’s heart-shaped rabbit key.

The other shaped like a ring.

Daniel’s missing wedding ring.

Alejandro approached without touching it.

“This room does not appear on any estate blueprint,” Matteo said.

“My grandfather rebuilt the study before I was born.”

“Who knew about it?”

“My mother might have.”

The Moretti estate had belonged to Alejandro’s mother until her death fourteen years earlier. She had created the foundation, selected its first board, and employed Evelyn Voss as her private secretary.

She had also taught Alejandro one rule as a child.

Never touch the north wall of the study.

At the time, he had believed she feared damage to the antique bookshelves.

Now he understood that she had been protecting a door.

Or hiding it.

Elena stared at the second key space.

“Who took Daniel’s ring?”

“Someone who knows this door exists,” Matteo said.

Mara searched Daniel’s recovered files for references to the estate.

One final encrypted message appeared.

It required voice authentication.

Emma walked closer to the computer.

“Bunny opened the other ones.”

Mara placed the stuffed rabbit beside the microphone.

The device emitted a quiet tone.

Daniel appeared on the screen again.

This recording was different.

A digital clock behind him displayed a date six months after his reported death.

Elena gripped the edge of the desk.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel’s face was thinner than before. A healing cut crossed one eyebrow. He sat inside a room with gray walls and no windows.

“Elena,” he said, “the crash did not kill me.”

Her knees nearly gave way.

Alejandro caught her arm.

Daniel continued.

“Evelyn’s people took me before the car reached the bridge. The body in the coffin was not mine.”

Elena shook her head repeatedly.

“No.”

“I agreed to disappear because they promised Emma would remain safe. I believed them until I found her name in the archive.”

Emma looked up at her mother.

“Daddy?”

Elena pulled her close.

Daniel glanced over his shoulder as though someone was approaching.

“The Patron knows the rabbit key exists. The wedding ring opens the second lock, but neither key should be used unless the estate is completely secure.”

Matteo studied the video.

“Can Mara determine where he recorded this?”

“Not from the visible background.”

Daniel leaned toward the camera.

“Alejandro, listen carefully. Sofia and Adrian were not chosen because they were powerful. They were chosen because they could be frightened.”

His voice became quieter.

“Evelyn was not the Keeper because she was loyal. She was the Keeper because the Patron held someone she loved.”

A faint alarm sounded behind him.

Daniel looked toward the door.

“If I fail to return, remember this. The person who ordered the poisoning still lives inside your house.”

Everyone in the study looked at one another.

Dr. Shah.

The guards.

The domestic staff.

The advisers who had remained after the arrests.

Any one of them could still be working for the Patron.

Daniel reached toward the camera.

“Do not let Matteo open the red door.”

The video ended.

Silence filled the study.

Matteo slowly lowered his weapon.

Elena stared at him.

Alejandro stepped between them.

“Why would Daniel warn me about you?”

“I don’t know.”

“You were security chief when Daniel died.”

“I investigated the crash.”

“You identified the body.”

Matteo’s expression changed.

“No.”

Alejandro waited.

“I was told not to inspect the body,” Matteo said. “Your family attorney claimed Elena had requested a closed coffin.”

“I never requested that,” Elena whispered.

Matteo looked toward the red door.

“I received the order from your mother’s private office.”

“My mother had been dead for twelve years.”

“The message carried her authentication code.”

Mara’s computer sounded an alert.

Someone had connected to the estate network from beneath the study.

A live camera feed appeared.

It showed a long underground corridor on the other side of the red door.

The corridor lights activated one by one.

At the far end stood a man wearing a dark coat.

His face was hidden.

A red stone gleamed on his hand.

Daniel’s wedding ring.

The man approached the camera and raised a small photograph.

It showed Emma as a newborn.

A woman stood beside Elena’s hospital bed.

The woman’s face had been cut from the photograph.

On the back, written in Daniel’s handwriting, were seven words:

THE PATRON WAS THERE WHEN EMMA WAS BORN.

The man lowered the photograph.

Then he lifted his head.

For one brief second, the camera captured his face.

Elena screamed.

The image disappeared before Alejandro could see clearly.

“What did you see?” he asked.

Elena backed away from the screen.

“That man…”

Her voice broke.

“That was Daniel.”

Three slow knocks came from the other side of the red door.

Emma slipped from Elena’s arms and walked toward the sound.

“Emma, stop,” Alejandro said.

She pressed her ear against the cold steel.

Another sequence followed.

Two knocks.

A pause.

Three knocks.

A pause.

One knock.

Emma’s eyes widened.

“Mr. Moretti…”

Alejandro moved toward her.

“What is it?”

She turned to face him, clutching the stuffed bunny against her yellow dress.

“That is Daddy’s secret knock.”

The circular lock on the red door turned by itself.

And from somewhere beneath the mansion, a child began to cry.
