Chapter 9 - The Attorney with Two Files

Lena saw the message before Evelyn could hide it.

For one second, neither woman spoke.

Then Lena said, "Adrian wants to divide us."

"Maybe."

"You think I am working with Julian?"

"I think everyone around my father kept a second file."

Arthur survived surgery. The bullet passed through muscle without striking an artery. Federal agents placed him under heavy guard, though Evelyn suspected guilt, not safety, was the greater weight on him.

Adrian and Julian remained missing.

The compass recovered from the terminal was a decoy. Julian had risked everything for useless coordinates, which meant the real map half was still safe.

Unless Lena had already copied it.

Evelyn asked to see the sealed evidence bag. Lena produced it immediately. The tamper strip appeared intact.

"Your father hired me fifteen years ago," Lena said. "He told me protecting you might eventually require you to hate me."

"That sounds convenient."

"It sounds like Samuel."

Evelyn ordered an independent forensic test. The bag's seal was genuine, but microscopic analysis found a needle puncture near one edge. Someone had inserted a camera or scanner without breaking the strip.

Security footage showed Lena alone with the bag for four minutes.

She was arrested before midnight.

During interrogation, Lena admitted copying the map but denied giving it to Julian.

"Samuel instructed me to create a failsafe duplicate," she said. "The map cannot be allowed to disappear with one heir."

"Where is the duplicate?"

"In a place only you can access."

"Then tell me."

"Not while the room is recording."

Evelyn dismissed the agents over their objections and switched off the visible camera. She knew hidden systems probably remained active, but Lena leaned forward and whispered anyway.

"Your wedding ring."

Evelyn pictured the ring still lying on the Vance breakfast table, now inside an evidence vault. Samuel had given it to Arthur before the proposal, claiming it belonged to Evelyn's grandmother.

The inner band contained a narrow line of decorative engraving. Lena said the engraving encoded the map when viewed through a polarized lens.

"Why did Samuel put it in Arthur's hands?" Evelyn asked.

"Because he needed Arthur to make one honest choice. He told Arthur the ring would give him access to everything if he earned your trust without coercion."

"Arthur already knew the courtship was an assignment."

"Yes. But Samuel offered him a way out."

Lena revealed a second Project Bridewell file, one Samuel kept separate from Conrad's records. Arthur confessed the Vance plot to Samuel three months before proposing. He claimed he truly loved Evelyn and wanted to abandon the plan.

Samuel tested him.

Arthur had to marry Evelyn without obtaining trust access, reject Conrad's compensation, and protect her identity even if the Vances turned against him.

For two years, Arthur complied.

Then Conrad died.

Within a week, Arthur accepted the Mediterranean property and joined the Vance scheme again.

"He chose twice," Evelyn said. "Once for me, once against me."

"People are rarely one decision," Lena replied. "But consequences can be."

Evelyn arranged Lena's release after verifying Samuel's instructions. Their trust was damaged but not destroyed.

At the evidence vault, they examined the wedding ring through a polarized lens. Blue coordinates appeared inside the gold.

Combined with the transparent map, they pointed not to Terminal North but to a location eighty miles offshore.

A decommissioned research platform called Meridian Crown.

The platform had officially sunk in a storm eighteen years earlier.

Satellite images showed nothing at the coordinates.

But sonar records from a private survey vessel revealed a structure beneath the surface.

Not a platform.

An artificial island concealed by retractable wave barriers.

Samuel and Elise had discovered something there worth dividing between their heirs.

As Evelyn prepared an expedition, Arthur asked to see her from his hospital bed.

He looked smaller without the mansion, the title, or his certainty.

"Julian contacted me before breakfast," he confessed. "He told me you planned to freeze everything."

"So you staged the humiliation."

"I thought if you left angry, you would delay. I needed one day to move funds and protect the company."

"You needed one day to steal what remained."

Tears filled his eyes. "I did love you."

Evelyn set the wedding ring on his bedside table.

"Love without courage is just another promise someone else pays for."

She turned to leave.

Arthur called after her. "Evelyn, Julian did not shoot me."

May you like

She stopped.

"Adrian did."
