Chapter 13 - The Bargain Evelyn Refused

The demand placed Evelyn in an impossible position.

Mara claimed Elise was alive and offered proof only if Margaret escaped prosecution. Releasing Margaret would betray every victim and weaken the case against the Vance network. Refusing might cost Adrian the mother he had spent his life mourning.

Adrian surprised Evelyn.

"We do not trade justice for a possibility," he said.

"She is your mother."

"That does not make Margaret innocent."

His answer carried pain but no hesitation.

They gave the cassette to investigators and publicly continued the prosecution. Privately, Evelyn sent Mara a message through the farmhouse computer:

I will not free Margaret. I will hear Elise in her own voice.

A reply arrived one minute later.

Then come to the first pier without police.

The first pier referred to Harcourt's original dock, now buried beneath a modern passenger terminal. Evelyn went with Adrian while agents monitored from a distance despite Mara's warning.

At midnight, a service elevator opened beneath the terminal. Mara stood inside.

She was around thirty, composed, with auburn hair and eyes that seemed almost silver under fluorescent light. The lighthouse pendant rested against a black coat.

"You brought surveillance," she said.

"You threatened a life," Evelyn replied.

Mara looked at Adrian. "You resemble Elise when you are angry."

"Where is she?"

"Safe from the people Evelyn just exposed. Not safe from what the exposure triggered."

Mara led them through tunnels to an old medical chamber. On the wall hung photographs of children raised inside institutions funded by shell companies connected to Meridian Crown buyers.

M-0 was not a patient tag.

It was a project designation.

Mara explained that Conrad sold access to the mineral discovery decades earlier. One buyer funded neurological research into workers exposed to rare compounds beneath the island. Pregnant women in the program gave birth to children with unusual sensitivities to magnetic fields and certain frequencies. Most records were destroyed.

Mara was the only known survivor.

She could sense Meridian Crown's hidden systems without codes.

"That is why the island was built for Samuel and Elise," Mara said. "They were hired to design routes and containment after the research began. When they understood human subjects were involved, they tried to shut it down."

"Samuel never told us," Evelyn said.

"Because he helped conceal it before he tried to correct it."

The revelation changed the moral shape of everything. Samuel was not only a victim of the Vances. He had participated in the early cover-up.

Adrian's voice hardened. "Where is Elise?"

Mara opened a secure video channel.

An elderly woman appeared in a dim room. Her hair was white, her face thin, but Adrian recognized her instantly from the film.

"My son," Elise whispered.

Adrian stepped toward the screen and stopped as though afraid movement would break it.

Elise spoke for only thirty seconds. She confirmed she was alive and said Mara had protected her for years. Then an alarm sounded on her side of the call.

The screen went dark.

Mara cursed and checked a handheld device. "They found the refuge."

"Who?" Evelyn asked.

"The Continuity Council. The buyers you exposed were only members. The council predates Vance Meridian and controls the treaties that made the island invisible."

An explosion shook the tunnel.

Federal agents shouted through Evelyn's earpiece that armed teams had entered the terminal from three directions.

Mara grabbed Adrian's arm. "If they capture me, they can reopen Meridian Crown without either heir."

Evelyn drew the emergency weapon an agent had given her and looked toward the dark tunnel.

"Then we leave together."

They escaped through a maintenance shaft while agents exchanged fire with masked attackers. At street level, Lena waited in an armored vehicle.

Mara refused to enter.

"Your attorney carries a council mark," she said.

Lena froze.

On the inside of Lena's wrist, usually covered by her watch, was a faint tattoo: three waves beneath a circle.

The same symbol appeared on sealed containers at Meridian Crown.
