Chapter 3 - The Brother Who Knew Her Name

Evelyn tightened her grip on the receiver.

"Who are you?"

"The person Father warned you about without ever naming."

The voice was calm, educated, and close enough in rhythm to Samuel's that Evelyn felt a chill.

"Samuel is dead."

"That did not stop him from signing the freeze."

"Where are you?"

"Watching the house your husband believes he owns."

Evelyn turned toward the library windows. Beyond the rain-streaked glass, investigators moved between vehicles. The estate's outer lawns disappeared into gray morning fog.

"What do you want?"

"The same thing you do. The truth about what the Vances stole. We differ only in what should happen after we find it."

"You authenticated as Samuel."

"I authenticated with Samuel's key. That is not the same thing."

"How did you get it?"

"He gave it to me before he died."

Pain sharpened Evelyn's voice. "I was with him every day."

"Not every night."

The line went quiet for a moment.

Then the man continued. "There is a red ledger inside the mansion. Conrad kept it because powerful men confuse possession with safety. Find it before Margaret does. Page eighty-seven will tell you why Chloe was moving vessel records. Page one hundred twelve will tell you why Arthur married you."

Evelyn's pulse quickened. "Arthur met me by accident."

The man laughed softly. "Nothing around the Vances happens by accident."

The line clicked dead.

When Evelyn returned to the hallway, Margaret was gone.

"Where is she?"

An officer pointed toward the east wing. "She said she needed medication. Another officer followed."

Evelyn looked at Arthur. "What red ledger?"

His eyes shifted before he answered. "I've never heard of it."

"He said page one hundred twelve explains why you married me."

Arthur's jaw tightened. "Who said that?"

"My brother."

For the first time that morning, Arthur looked genuinely frightened.

Evelyn understood then that he had heard of the brother, even if he did not know the man's identity.

She moved toward Conrad's study at the rear of the mansion. The door was locked. Lena obtained permission from the asset custodian, and an investigator forced it open.

The room smelled of cedar, dust, and old cigar smoke. Conrad's desk stood beneath windows facing the private gardens. Behind it, steel shelves held labeled binders going back forty years.

They searched for twenty minutes.

No red ledger.

Evelyn ran her hand along the desk's underside and felt a shallow groove. Samuel had taught her to search furniture by touch, not sight. She pressed the groove. A narrow panel opened in the floor beside the fireplace.

Inside was an empty cavity.

Dust covered the edges, but the center showed a fresh rectangular outline.

Someone had removed a book recently.

A smear of brown coffee marked the metal rim.

Chloe.

They found her in the breakfast room under guard, still wearing the cream blouse stained when she knocked the cup from the table.

"Where is the ledger?" Evelyn asked.

Chloe rolled her eyes. "I don't know."

Evelyn held up a cloth swab an investigator had taken from the compartment. "Your coffee is in Conrad's hidden safe."

"So? I spill things."

"The transfer on your laptop went to Malta. The same jurisdiction where three Vance shell companies hold undeclared accounts. Talk now, before federal prosecutors decide your silence is conspiracy."

Chloe's arrogance weakened. "Arthur told me to send the manifests."

Arthur shouted from across the room, "She's lying."

"He said the freeze might happen," Chloe continued quickly. "He said if Evelyn ever learned who she was, we had to move the files and contact a man named Mercer."

Evelyn turned toward her husband.

"You knew who I was."

Arthur said nothing.

"How long?"

His silence became confession.

Chloe began to cry, less from guilt than fear. "I took the ledger last night. Mother caught me. She said she would hide it somewhere no investigator would search."

"Where?"

"I don't know. She left the house for an hour before dawn."

Lena checked the estate security log. The main gates showed no exit, but a service tunnel connected the wine cellar to an old carriage house beyond the walls.

Investigators searched the tunnel and found Margaret's footprints in the damp soil.

At the carriage house, they discovered a burned metal box, melted plastic, and scraps of charred paper.

Arthur exhaled with relief.

Evelyn noticed.

Then an investigator lifted a half-burned page with tongs. The number 112 remained visible in the corner.

Most of the text had turned to ash, but one sentence survived:

SUBJECT E.H. IS UNAWARE THAT A.V. WAS APPROVED FOR CONTACT.

Below it was Arthur's signature.

Dated six weeks before he first met Evelyn.
