Chapter 7 - The Third Heir

No one in the known Harcourt or Vance records was named Julian.
Lena ordered searches across family files, corporate rosters, adoption archives, and private security reports. The name appeared dozens of times but never with a clear connection.
Evelyn returned to Samuel's house after midnight.
She had avoided it since his death. Dust softened the furniture. His brown winter coat still hung beside the back door. A half-finished grocery list remained beneath a magnet on the refrigerator.
She stood in the kitchen and allowed herself sixty seconds to grieve.
Then she searched.
Samuel said she already possessed the other half of Elise's map. Evelyn inspected jewelry, childhood boxes, books, framed photographs, and the old sailing equipment stored in the attic.
At three in the morning, she found a compass Samuel had given her on her sixteenth birthday. Its glass face was scratched. The needle had never pointed correctly.
She unscrewed the back.
Inside was a transparent semicircle printed with fine blue lines.
The map.
When held over a harbor chart, it revealed only partial coordinates. The missing half belonged to Adrian.
A folded paper beneath it contained one sentence:
Julian was the child we could not save.
Evelyn called Lena.
Within an hour, they uncovered a sealed birth record. Elise Mercer had delivered twins.
Adrian was born first.
Julian was born seven minutes later.
The adoption file for Adrian existed. Julian's did not. Instead, a confidential hospital transfer recorded that the second infant suffered respiratory failure and was moved to a private clinic funded by Vance Maritime.
There was no death certificate.
"Margaret raised him somewhere," Evelyn said.
"Or Conrad did," Lena replied.
A facial-recognition search of old Vance security footage produced a match. Julian Mercer had worked for the family for years under the name Julian Cross. He served as Conrad's private driver, then as head of off-book security. He was present at Samuel's hospital twice during the week before Samuel died.
Evelyn studied a photograph of him: broad-shouldered, shaved head, a thin scar across his left eyebrow.
She remembered him.
On the night Samuel died, Julian stood at the end of the hospital corridor wearing a maintenance uniform. She assumed he was staff.
He had watched her leave the room to speak with a doctor.
That was the window in which someone could have copied Samuel's biometric key.
"Adrian did not authenticate the freeze," she said. "Julian did."
Lena nodded slowly. "And he may have used Adrian's identity to trigger the secondary heir clause."
The question was why.
At dawn, police found Margaret Vance walking barefoot along a highway twelve miles outside the city. Her wrists were bruised, her dress torn, and Conrad's signet was missing.
She demanded protection before speaking.
In a secure hospital room, she told Evelyn that Adrian had abducted her but never harmed her. He wanted the vault and proof about Elise. After Margaret opened it, Julian appeared with two armed men.
"Adrian looked shocked," Margaret said. "He thought his brother died at birth."
"What did Julian take?"
"The bonds, the map, and Adrian."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Evelyn stepped closer. "You raised Julian."
Margaret's eyes hardened. "Conrad did. He believed a child without love could become the perfect instrument."
"You let him imprison Elise."
"I protected this family."
"You destroyed three children and called it protection."
Margaret looked away.
Before Evelyn left, Margaret said, "Julian will come for Arthur next."
"Why?"
"Because Conrad made Arthur his legal son, but Julian his true successor. There is a codicil. If Arthur is proven unfit, Julian inherits Conrad's controlling rights."
"Those rights were stolen from Samuel."
"Courts decide ownership slowly. Guns decide it quickly."
Evelyn's phone vibrated.
A live video opened.
Arthur was being transferred from the interview facility when a black truck blocked the convoy. Masked men dragged him from the vehicle.
The feed cut to Julian standing inside a warehouse. Arthur knelt behind him with blood on his mouth. Adrian was tied to another chair.
Julian looked into the camera.
"Bring your half of the map to Terminal North by sunset," he said. "Come alone, or both of your husbands die."
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Both husbands.
May you like
Adrian lifted his head and shouted, "He's lying about who you married!"
Then Julian struck him, and the video went black.
