Chapter 10 - The Island That Did Not Exist

The expedition left before dawn aboard a Coast Guard cutter accompanied by federal investigators, maritime engineers, and a tactical team.

Evelyn stood at the bow as the city vanished behind gray water. Lena remained under restricted supervision, allowed to advise but not handle evidence. The distance between them felt larger than the sea.

Arthur's claim complicated everything.

Ballistics confirmed the bullet removed from his shoulder came from a weapon recovered near Adrian's chair. But in darkness and chaos, anyone could have fired it.

Evelyn remembered Adrian's warning on the warehouse feed, his blood-written message, and Samuel's description of a son shaped by abandonment.

She wanted to trust him because he was her brother.

She distrusted that desire most of all.

At the coordinates, the ocean appeared empty. Sonar detected a circular barrier sixty feet below the surface. Engineers transmitted a coded pulse derived from the lighthouse emblem.

The sea changed.

Metal walls rose slowly from beneath the waves, shedding tons of water. Within twenty minutes, an island of steel and concrete emerged around a central tower.

MERIDIAN CROWN was stamped above the entrance.

Inside, power systems activated automatically. Corridors lit one section at a time, revealing laboratories preserved in dry air. Old computers hummed. Storage rooms held mineral samples, navigation equipment, and sealed containers marked with government classification codes.

The discovery was not treasure in the ordinary sense.

It was a rare-earth deposit beneath international shipping lanes, large enough to influence global electronics and defense supply chains. Samuel and Elise had found it while surveying routes. Conrad wanted to sell secret extraction rights to competing governments. Samuel feared the conflict that would follow.

They created Meridian Crown to hold the evidence until ethical oversight became possible.

In the command room, Evelyn found a terminal requiring two biometric profiles.

Harcourt Heir One.

Mercer Heir Two.

Her access opened half the archive. The remaining files stayed dark.

"Adrian must be present," Lena said.

A voice answered through the intercom.

"I am."

Doors locked throughout the facility.

Adrian appeared on a security monitor. His face was bruised, one eye swollen. He stood in another control room with a pistol in hand.

"Julian is here," he said. "He came before you."

Evelyn approached the screen. "Did you shoot Arthur?"

"Yes."

The blunt answer stunned her.

"Why?"

"Because he moved first. He had a blade taped beneath his chair and was trying to cut a deal with Julian. I aimed for his arm."

"You could have killed him."

"I have wanted to for years. Wanting and doing are different."

Adrian said Julian had forced him to use his biometric profile, then entered the lower extraction chamber with the stolen bearer bonds and both map halves. He intended to activate an old legal protocol linking control of the deposit to Meridian voting rights.

"He can take the company," Lena said.

"Worse," Adrian replied. "He can sell the deposit before courts stop him."

A countdown appeared on every screen.

TRANSFER AUCTION BEGINS IN 18:00.

Evelyn and the tactical team moved toward the lower chamber. Blast doors separated each corridor. Adrian opened them remotely until the final junction.

There, they found three wounded agents who had entered through a submarine dock. One managed to say, "Inside man," before losing consciousness.

Evelyn looked at Lena.

Lena raised both hands. "Not me."

The tactical commander ordered everyone searched. In the pocket of the asset custodian, they found a transmitter broadcasting their location.

He attacked before they could restrain him, grabbed an agent's weapon, and fired into the ceiling. Lena tackled Evelyn behind a console. Agents subdued the custodian after a brief struggle.

"Julian paid me years ago," the man gasped. "The freeze was always supposed to lead him here."

Evelyn understood. Harbor Zero had not been a defensive system anymore. Julian altered it into a trail. Her activation unlocked each hidden stage.

The final blast door opened.

Julian stood on a platform above a deep shaft glowing with blue industrial light. Adrian was now beside him, hands raised, his pistol on the floor.

A dozen remote buyers appeared on screens around the chamber, their faces hidden behind digital masks.

The countdown reached sixty seconds.

Julian held up the two transparent map halves.

"Thank you for bringing me the only key I lacked," he said.

Evelyn looked down.

May you like

Her wedding ring was no longer on Lena's evidence chain.

It was in Julian's hand.
