Chapter 11 - The Price of a Family Name

Lena touched her empty chain and went pale.

"He took it when I pulled you down."

Julian smiled from the platform. "You still assume every theft requires proximity. The ring in my hand is a replica. The code was scanned days ago."

The auction screens began receiving bids.

Numbers rose in currencies and encrypted assets. The amount exceeded the entire public value of Vance Meridian within seconds.

Julian addressed the hidden buyers. "Control includes extraction rights, protected routes, and political insulation through legacy agreements."

Evelyn stepped toward the biometric terminal. "Those agreements are void."

"Not until a court says so. By then, ownership will be distributed across jurisdictions that do not answer your calls."

Adrian stood beside Julian, strangely still.

"Why is he not restrained?" Evelyn asked.

Julian glanced at his twin. "Because he finally understands. We were abandoned by every family that claimed us. Samuel hid. Margaret lied. Conrad trained us. You inherited the power. Why should we preserve any of it?"

Adrian looked at Evelyn. "He offered me half."

"And?"

"I asked for more."

Julian laughed.

Evelyn felt betrayal settle into place. Adrian had guided her to the ledger, the vault, and the island. Every revelation could have been part of a strategy to bring all keys together.

"Was anything you told me true?" she asked.

Adrian's expression did not change. "Truth is the easiest bait."

The highest bid stabilized.

Julian inserted Conrad's signet into a mechanical slot. The system requested the Harcourt biometric pair.

Adrian placed his hand on one scanner.

Evelyn's scanner waited.

"You cannot complete it without me," she said.

Julian lifted his pistol toward Lena. "Then I will motivate you."

Evelyn did not move.

He shifted the gun toward an injured agent.

"You built your identity around protecting people," Julian said. "That makes you predictable."

"No. It makes you careless."

Evelyn pressed her palm to the scanner.

Lena stared at her in disbelief.

The system recognized both heirs.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION AVAILABLE.

Julian entered the winning buyer code.

A warning appeared.

FOUNDER ETHICS REVIEW REQUIRED.

Julian frowned. "What is this?"

Samuel's recorded image appeared across the screens.

"Conrad," the recording said, "if you are seeing this, you found a way to force both heirs into the room. You always believed coercion was control. It is not."

The system had detected weapons, restraints, and unauthorized bidders. The Founder's Safeguard expanded automatically.

All auction funds were seized into an international evidence escrow.

Buyer identities decrypted.

Government enforcement alerts transmitted.

Julian fired at the terminal, but armored glass deflected the bullet.

Adrian moved instantly. He drove his shoulder into Julian and knocked the pistol away. The brothers crashed against the railing.

"You said you joined him," Evelyn shouted.

Adrian strained against Julian. "I said I asked for more. I wanted more time."

Agents rushed forward. Julian pulled a knife and slashed Adrian's side. Evelyn grabbed a steel lever and struck Julian's wrist. The knife fell into the shaft.

Julian seized Evelyn by the throat and dragged her toward the edge.

"Samuel chose you," he hissed. "Conrad chose Arthur. No one chose me."

Evelyn forced out the words, "You keep making that everyone else's crime."

Adrian struck Julian from behind. Agents pulled Evelyn free. Julian climbed onto the railing, blood running from his hand.

For a moment, he looked at his brother.

Then he stepped backward into the shaft.

Adrian lunged and caught his wrist.

Julian hung above the blue light.

"Let me go," he said.

Adrian's injured side bled through his shirt. His grip slipped.

Evelyn grabbed Adrian's arm. Agents formed a chain behind her.

Together, they began pulling Julian upward.

Julian looked at Evelyn with something like confusion.

"Why?"

"Because I decide who I become," she said. "Not you. Not Samuel. Not the Vances."

They lifted him over the railing.

Julian was arrested alive.

The auction collapsed. Buyers were exposed. The bearer bonds were secured. Meridian Crown entered international protective custody.

It should have been the end.

Then the command terminal displayed a final message from Samuel.

ONE HEIR IS STILL MISSING.
