Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the Steel Door

The laughter stopped as suddenly as it had begun.
Dust drifted through the beam of Ethan's flashlight.
Behind them, the staircase had completely disappeared beneath broken stone and twisted steel.
Detective Laura Bennett rushed to the collapsed entrance.
"No signal."
One of the officers pushed against the rubble.
"It won't move."
Samuel closed his eyes.
"This wasn't meant to trap us."
Ethan looked at him.
"It was meant to separate us from the outside world."
The ancient speaker crackled once more.
"Good."
The old man's voice sounded almost pleased.
"Both of you came."
Ethan frowned.
"Both?"
The steel door slowly unlocked with a heavy metallic click.
No one had touched it.
It opened inward by itself.
A long corridor stretched into darkness.
Oil lamps fixed to the walls suddenly ignited one after another.
Someone had activated them remotely.
The group exchanged uneasy glances.
Laura raised her pistol.
"We stay together."
No one argued.
...
The corridor ended at a circular chamber unlike anything Ethan had expected.
It wasn't a vault.
It was a library.
Thousands of leather-bound journals covered the walls from floor to ceiling.
Maps.
Blueprints.
Photographs.
Portraits.
Every shelf had been meticulously organized.
In the center stood a massive oak table.
On it rested two identical wooden boxes.
One bore a brass plaque reading:
Ethan.
The other:
Elijah.
Samuel whispered,
"He prepared for both of you."
Ethan slowly approached his box.
Before he could touch it, another voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"Only the rightful brother may open his own box."
The voice was different this time.
Not old.
Not weak.
Firm.
Commanding.
Almost...
Alive.
...
Hundreds of miles away...
Elijah slammed on the brakes.
His SUV skidded sideways across an empty highway.
Mariana grabbed the dashboard.
"What happened?"
Elijah stared ahead.
Across the road stood a woman dressed entirely in white.
She wasn't moving.
She simply watched them.
Mariana whispered,
"Is that..."
Elijah nodded slowly.
"The Raven."
The woman raised one hand.
Then pointed east.
Without speaking.
Without smiling.
Seconds later...
She disappeared into the forest.
Not walked.
Not ran.
Simply...
Gone.
Mariana looked around in disbelief.
"Did you..."
"I saw her."
"Who is she?"
Elijah tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
"The only person who's appeared in every generation of the Bell records."
"That's impossible."
"I know."
...
Back beneath Bell Manor...
Ethan carefully lifted the lid of his wooden box.
Inside lay a leather journal.
A silver pocket watch.
A sealed envelope.
And an old cassette labeled:
Play Alone.
Samuel reached for the journal.
Ethan stopped him.
"My name is on it."
Samuel nodded.
"You're right."
The first page contained only one sentence.
If you're reading this...
Then I failed to keep you ordinary.
Ethan slowly turned the page.
The handwriting matched every note they had discovered.
Neat.
Precise.
Confident.
My name is Arthur Bell.
Or at least...
That is the name history remembers.
History is wrong.
Ethan's pulse quickened.
He continued reading.
Everything you've been told about me was designed to protect one secret.
The fortune was never the inheritance.
You were.
Ethan froze.
He reread the sentence.
Again.
And again.
Samuel leaned closer.
"What is it?"
Ethan looked up.
"He says..."
"...we're the inheritance."
Silence filled the chamber.
Laura quietly lowered her weapon.
"What does that even mean?"
No one had an answer.
...
Meanwhile...
Rodrigo finally reached Bell Manor with a heavily armed team.
They found the mansion deserted.
No police.
No vehicles.
No Ethan.
The explosion had sealed every visible entrance.
One of his men ran toward him.
"Sir."
"We found fresh tire tracks."
"How many?"
"At least six vehicles."
Rodrigo looked at the ruined fireplace.
"They're already inside."
The gray-coated man stepped from the shadows.
"You've arrived too late."
Rodrigo spun around.
"You knew about this place."
"Of course."
"Then open it."
The stranger calmly shook his head.
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm not family."
Rodrigo aimed his pistol directly at the man's chest.
"I've worked for you for two years."
"You've lied to me for two years."
"I told you only what you needed."
Rodrigo's finger tightened on the trigger.
"So tell me this."
"Who are you?"
For the first time...
The gray-coated man smiled genuinely.
"My name..."
"...is Richard Bell."
Rodrigo's eyes widened.
"Bell?"
Richard nodded.
"The last son Arthur never acknowledged."
Before Rodrigo could react...
A sniper's bullet pierced the window behind them.
Richard moved first.
He shoved Rodrigo to the floor.
The bullet struck the wall where Rodrigo's head had been.
More shots followed.
Someone else had arrived.
Someone hunting the Bell family.
...
Inside the underground library...
Laura examined the second wooden box.
The one marked Elijah.
"It's still locked."
Ethan looked at it.
"If Elijah isn't here..."
"Can it be opened?"
Samuel slowly shook his head.
"No."
The room suddenly trembled.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
A hidden projector flickered to life.
An enormous map appeared across the stone wall.
Not of the city.
Not of the country.
Of the entire world.
Red lights blinked across dozens of locations.
London.
Zurich.
Tokyo.
Buenos Aires.
Cape Town.
New York.
Sydney.
Each light pulsed in sequence.
Then a sentence appeared beneath the map.
THEY HAVE FOUND 27 OF 30.
Samuel's face lost all color.
Laura noticed immediately.
"You know what that means."
Samuel whispered,
"There aren't thirty bank accounts."
"There aren't thirty companies."
He looked slowly toward Ethan.
"There are thirty vaults."
"Hidden all over the world."
Each one protected by members of the Bell bloodline.
Before anyone could speak again...
The projector displayed one final message.
VAULT 28 HAS BEEN BREACHED.
A loud siren echoed through the underground complex.
Every bookshelf around them began sliding sideways.
Hidden passages opened in every direction.
Emergency lights flooded the chamber.
Then the same commanding voice returned.
Calm.
Urgent.
"If you can hear this..."
"...the war has already begun."
At that exact moment, Ethan's satellite phone vibrated.
One message.
One photograph.
It showed Elijah tied to a chair.
Behind him stood a masked figure holding a pistol.
The message contained only six words.
May you like
COME ALONE...
OR YOUR BROTHER DIES.
