Chapter 13 - Fifty-Nine Seconds

00:59

The countdown echoed through Vault Thirty-One.

Every candle around the chamber turned crimson.

Laura Bennett dropped behind the nearest stone pillar.

"Everyone move!"

Samuel grabbed Ethan's arm.

"We have to leave!"

Ethan didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on the frozen projector screen.

The old man had almost said something.

Don't let your brother open—

Open what?

Vault One?

Vault Thirty-One?

The Archive?

Another explosion shook the chamber.

Chunks of limestone crashed from the ceiling.

The computerized voice remained calm.

Fifty-five seconds.

Emergency synchronization continues.

Laura aimed her flashlight toward the walls.

"The explosives aren't here to kill us."

Samuel looked confused.

"What?"

"They're placed too evenly."

She ran her fingers across one of the devices.

"They're directional charges."

Ethan frowned.

"So?"

"They're going to expose something hidden behind these walls."

Another blast.

The stone chamber trembled violently.

Hairline cracks spread across every wall.

Then...

An entire section collapsed.

Dust filled the air.

When it settled...

Everyone stood frozen.

Behind the wall wasn't rock.

It was glass.

An enormous wall of reinforced crystal.

Behind the crystal...

Hundreds of people slept inside transparent capsules.

Men.

Women.

Teenagers.

Children.

Every capsule carried a year.

Each sleeping person had one thing in common.

Their faces.

They all looked astonishingly similar.

Not identical.

But unmistakably related.

Samuel whispered,

"The bloodline..."

Laura slowly lowered her weapon.

"My God..."

Ethan stepped closer.

One capsule bore a familiar name.

Arthur Bell.

Occupied.

Heart rate active.

His blood ran cold.

Arthur Bell...

Was alive.

Not one recording.

Not one legend.

Alive.

The computerized voice interrupted.

Forty-two seconds.

Life-support transfer beginning.

Ethan stared through the crystal.

Arthur Bell's eyes suddenly opened.

He looked directly at Ethan.

Then slowly raised one trembling hand.

Not toward himself.

Toward the far end of the chamber.

Someone else was waking.

...

Meanwhile...

Outside Vault Thirty-One...

Rodrigo watched the live surveillance feed from Harvest's command vehicle.

His smile widened.

"It worked."

One of his officers frowned.

"What exactly worked?"

"Vault Thirty-One was never a storage room."

"It was a trigger."

Richard Bell quietly stepped away from the monitors.

"You fool."

Rodrigo laughed.

"I've already won."

"No."

Richard's voice became cold.

"You've awakened the wrong person."

Before Rodrigo could answer...

Every monitor lost signal simultaneously.

A single symbol appeared.

A raven.

Standing on a key.

Richard closed his eyes.

"She's here."

"The Raven is dead," Rodrigo replied.

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No."

"You killed only the guardian."

"You've never met..."

"The Keeper."

Silence swept through the command center.

Then every radio began broadcasting the same whisper.

Welcome back...

Keeper.

...

Miles away...

Mariana finally reached the underground entrance.

Police tape had already been torn away.

The tunnel lay open.

She climbed down alone.

Halfway through the descent...

She found blood.

Fresh.

Not from battle.

A trail.

One person.

Walking calmly.

Toward Vault Thirty-One.

Mariana followed it.

At the end of the corridor she stopped.

Someone stood waiting in the darkness.

An elderly woman wearing a white coat.

Silver hair.

Blue eyes.

She smiled kindly.

"I've been waiting for you..."

"...Mariana Bell."

Mariana's heart stopped.

"Bell?"

"I've never been a Bell."

The woman tilted her head.

"Not yet."

Then she gently handed Mariana a faded birth certificate.

Mother:

Rebecca Bell.

Father:

Unknown.

Mariana slowly looked up.

The woman whispered,

"You're family."

At that exact moment...

The countdown inside Vault Thirty-One reached...

00:30.

The crystal wall behind Ethan suddenly began opening.

Not one capsule.

All of them.

At once.

The sleepers slowly opened their eyes.

May you like

And Arthur Bell...

Smiled.
