Chapter 11 - Vault One

The words on the steel door seemed almost alive.
WELCOME HOME, ETHAN BELL.
Ethan slowly stepped forward.
"I've never used that name."
Samuel remained motionless.
"No."
"But someone expected you would."
The crystal key in Ethan's hand suddenly grew warm.
A soft blue light pulsed from inside it.
Without anyone touching the vault...
Ancient gears hidden behind the concrete walls began turning.
Laura immediately raised her pistol.
"Everybody back."
The vault door unlocked itself.
It opened less than three inches.
Cold air escaped.
Not the stale smell of an abandoned bunker.
Fresh air.
As though someone had entered only hours before.
Ethan pulled the heavy steel door wider.
Inside...
There was no gold.
No stacks of cash.
No priceless artwork.
Only a modest room furnished like a study.
A wooden desk.
A fireplace.
A leather chair.
A chessboard frozen in the middle of a game.
On the desk sat a steaming cup of coffee.
Still warm.
Laura checked it with the back of her hand.
"Someone was just here."
No footprints.
No hidden doors.
No windows.
The room had only one entrance.
The vault door.
Samuel examined the chessboard.
His expression changed.
"I know this opening."
Ethan looked closer.
"You play chess?"
Samuel nodded.
"Arthur did."
He pointed at the arrangement.
"He always used this exact position to send a message."
"What message?"
Samuel slowly moved one white bishop.
A hidden drawer quietly slid open beneath the desk.
Inside rested another envelope.
This one was addressed to Ethan...
In Mariana's handwriting.
...
Across the country...
Mariana entered an abandoned lighthouse overlooking the ocean.
The tower had been deserted for years.
Or so everyone believed.
At the top waited Richard Bell.
He stood beside an enormous antique telescope.
"You made good time."
Mariana ignored him.
"You lied to me."
Richard smiled faintly.
"I omitted details."
"You told me Ethan married me by chance."
"He believed that."
"I asked what was true."
Richard turned away from the window.
"You were selected before Ethan ever met you."
Silence.
"What?"
"You weren't chosen because Ethan loved you."
"You were introduced so someone trustworthy would always remain close to him."
Mariana shook her head.
"No."
"You fell in love."
"That part wasn't planned."
Her breathing became uneven.
"So everything..."
"My career..."
"My promotion..."
"My meeting with Rodrigo..."
Richard answered quietly.
"Those were planned."
Mariana stared at him.
"I was being used."
"Yes."
"So was Ethan."
...
Back inside Vault One...
Ethan unfolded Mariana's letter.
His hands trembled.
Ethan,
If you've reached this room...
Then I'm either dead...
Or I've finally become the villain you'll always remember.
Please don't stop reading.
Everything between us began as a lie.
But not everything stayed one.
The first time I met you...
I was following orders.
The second time...
I was curious.
By the hundredth time...
I loved you.
Tears slowly formed in Ethan's eyes.
He continued.
I never wanted your money.
Rodrigo did.
Harvest did.
The people behind Arthur did.
I wanted something much simpler.
I wanted a normal life.
With you.
But normal people don't survive inside this family.
The final page was missing.
Someone had torn it away.
Samuel quietly looked toward Ethan.
"Do you believe her?"
"I don't know."
"But someone removed the ending."
...
Meanwhile...
Rodrigo finally located the underground entrance using military excavation equipment.
The explosion had buried most of Bell Manor.
His men lowered ropes into the tunnel.
One returned five minutes later.
"It's empty."
"What?"
"They're gone."
Rodrigo entered personally.
The underground library had been abandoned.
The journals remained.
The maps remained.
Only one thing had disappeared.
Vault One's crystal key.
Rodrigo slammed his fist into a bookshelf.
"We're too late."
Richard's voice echoed from the darkness.
"No."
"You've arrived exactly when you're supposed to."
Rodrigo spun around.
"You followed me."
"I've always followed everyone."
Rodrigo aimed his pistol.
"I'm done taking orders."
Richard slowly spread his hands.
"Then shoot."
Rodrigo hesitated.
Richard smiled.
"You can't."
"Why?"
"Because you still need me."
"For what?"
Richard looked directly into Rodrigo's eyes.
"I'm the only person alive..."
"...who knows where Vault Thirty is."
...
Inside Vault One...
Laura searched every shelf.
Hundreds of journals.
Each labeled by year.
Every five years.
Exactly matching the mysterious lottery dates.
Samuel selected the oldest volume.
Inside was a list.
Not of winners.
Of guardians.
Every five years...
One family protected one chosen individual.
One name caught Ethan's attention.
Harper.
June Harper.
The grocery store cashier.
Laura looked stunned.
"She wasn't random."
Samuel nodded.
"She was assigned to watch you."
Another familiar name appeared farther down.
Grant.
Samuel Grant.
Samuel slowly lowered the journal.
"I wasn't only your attorney."
"You knew?"
Samuel's voice cracked.
"I've known since the day you were born."
"You lied to me."
"I protected you."
"You watched me my entire life."
"Yes."
Ethan stepped backward.
Every memory suddenly felt different.
Every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every unexpected visit from Samuel.
Every coincidence.
Nothing had been coincidence.
"You all decided my life."
Samuel lowered his head.
"We were trying to save it."
Before Ethan could respond...
A soft mechanical voice echoed through the vault.
Identity confirmed.
Primary heir recognized.
Secondary heir absent.
Emergency protocol initiated.
The walls began moving.
Bookshelves slid aside.
A hidden elevator slowly rose from beneath the floor.
Its doors opened.
Inside stood only one object.
A hospital bassinet.
Wrapped in a faded blue blanket.
Samuel stared at it in disbelief.
"No..."
"What is it?" Laura asked.
Samuel slowly lifted the blanket.
Inside lay two tiny silver bracelets.
One engraved:
ETHAN.
The other...
Had been snapped in half.
The broken bracelet bore a single name.
ELIJAH.
At that exact moment...
Every light inside Vault One suddenly turned blood red.
A countdown appeared on the far wall.
05:00
04:59
04:58
Laura immediately drew her weapon.
"What now?"
A calm computerized voice answered.
Unauthorized access detected.
Vault One will permanently seal in five minutes.
And outside the vault...
Very faintly...
Ethan heard footsteps.
Not one person.
Not two.
May you like
Dozens.
Someone had finally found them.
