Chapter 12 - The Thirty-First Vault

The countdown continued.

04:11

04:10

04:09

Heavy footsteps echoed outside Vault One.

Metal scraped against metal.

Someone was attaching explosives to the outer door.

Laura chambered another round.

"They're breaching."

Samuel ignored the sound.

His attention remained fixed on the broken silver bracelet lying inside the bassinet.

"It shouldn't be broken."

Ethan looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Samuel carefully turned the bracelet over.

Tiny words had been engraved on the inside.

Not visible from the outside.

He read them aloud.

"When divided... survive."

Laura frowned.

"There has to be more."

Samuel picked up Ethan's bracelet.

Inside it was another inscription.

"When reunited... remember."

Silence settled over the room.

The two bracelets weren't keepsakes.

They were instructions.

...

BOOM!

The first explosive charge shook the vault.

Concrete dust drifted from the ceiling.

The computerized voice calmly announced,

Three minutes remaining.

Permanent lockdown initiated.

Samuel suddenly walked to the giant world map hanging on the far wall.

He studied the thirty marked vaults.

Something bothered him.

"There."

He pointed.

"Look carefully."

Ethan stepped beside him.

"What?"

"There are thirty vaults..."

"...but thirty-one markers."

Laura narrowed her eyes.

The tiny red light hidden beneath the map had been almost invisible.

It wasn't numbered.

It simply blinked once every five seconds.

Samuel whispered,

"They wanted us looking at the wrong number."

"The real destination..."

"...was never one through thirty."

Ethan slowly touched the hidden light.

The wall vibrated.

A section of stone silently folded inward.

Behind it stood another elevator.

Smaller.

Older.

Above its entrance someone had carved three words.

Vault Thirty-One.

Laura looked stunned.

"I thought there were only thirty."

"So did everyone else," Samuel replied.

...

Outside...

Rodrigo stood among dozens of Harvest soldiers.

The breach commander removed his headset.

"Sir."

"We've located Vault One."

"Good."

"The problem..."

"What?"

"It opened by itself."

Rodrigo frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It accepted Ethan."

Richard Bell quietly stepped beside him.

"It always would."

Rodrigo turned sharply.

"You knew."

Richard nodded.

"But you still don't understand."

Rodrigo grabbed Richard by the collar.

"Stop speaking in riddles."

Richard smiled.

"You're attacking the wrong vault."

Rodrigo's expression froze.

"What?"

"The Bell family never protected Vault One."

"They protected what was hidden behind it."

Before Rodrigo could react...

Every monitor inside Harvest's mobile command center suddenly went black.

One sentence appeared across every screen.

WELCOME, RICHARD.

Richard slowly closed his eyes.

"They've activated it."

...

Meanwhile...

Mariana finally reached Bell Manor.

The estate had become a battlefield.

Burned vehicles.

Abandoned weapons.

Bodies covered by emergency blankets.

She found Detective Bennett's backup team securing the ruins.

One officer stopped her.

"This area is closed."

"I need Detective Bennett."

"She's missing."

"What?"

"She entered the underground tunnels."

"When?"

Mariana looked toward the shattered mansion.

Without another word...

She climbed over the police barrier.

...

Deep below...

The hidden elevator descended silently.

Unlike every other chamber...

Vault Thirty-One had no electricity.

Only candles.

Hundreds of them.

Their flames burned without flickering.

As though untouched by air.

The elevator doors opened.

An enormous circular room stretched beyond.

No gold.

No records.

No computers.

Instead...

Thousands of framed photographs covered every wall.

Every photograph showed Ethan.

As a baby.

At kindergarten.

His first bicycle.

Graduation.

His wedding.

Buying groceries.

Receiving the lottery ticket.

Every moment of his life.

Someone had documented everything.

Laura slowly turned in horror.

"My God..."

Samuel whispered,

"They never stopped watching."

In the center of the room stood one chair.

Facing an old film projector.

The projector suddenly switched on by itself.

Static filled the white screen.

Then...

An elderly man appeared.

White hair.

Sharp blue eyes.

The same eyes Ethan saw every morning in the mirror.

"Hello, Ethan."

The recording smiled warmly.

"If you're seeing this..."

"...then I finally ran out of time."

Ethan's heart stopped.

The man looked exactly like Arthur Bell.

Alive.

Not a photograph.

Not a memory.

A recording.

Samuel stepped closer.

"This was made recently."

The man continued.

"My real name isn't Arthur Bell."

"You already know that."

"What you don't know..."

"...is why I stole his identity."

The recording suddenly glitched.

The image distorted.

A warning message flashed across the projector.

REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.

UNKNOWN USER CONNECTING.

The old man's face disappeared.

Static returned.

Then another face slowly emerged.

Rodrigo.

He smiled directly into the camera.

"Thank you, Ethan."

"You finally opened the only vault I could never enter."

Ethan stared at the screen.

Rodrigo continued.

"I've spent fifteen years searching for Vault Thirty-One."

"And you just handed it to me."

Samuel looked around the chamber.

"No..."

"It can't be."

Laura suddenly noticed something on the floor.

Tiny red lights.

Dozens of them.

Hidden beneath the candles.

She dropped to one knee.

"Everyone back!"

"What is it?" Ethan shouted.

Laura's face turned white.

"They aren't candles."

"They're detonators."

The entire chamber had been wired with explosives.

A calm computerized voice echoed from unseen speakers.

Unauthorized synchronization complete.

Transfer protocol initiated.

Estimated detonation...

Sixty seconds.

The projector flickered one final time.

The elderly man briefly reappeared.

His expression no longer calm.

He was terrified.

He looked directly into the camera and shouted,

"Ethan!"

"Don't let your brother open—"

The recording cut to black.

The countdown reached...

00:59.
