Chapter 14 - The First Guardian

00:29
The chamber trembled as the crystal capsules unlocked one by one.
Compressed air hissed into the room.
Arthur Bell slowly stepped out of his capsule.
He looked older than Ethan had imagined.
His white hair rested neatly against his shoulders.
His face carried deep lines carved by time.
Yet his eyes remained impossibly sharp.
He wasn't weak.
He wasn't confused.
He looked like a man who had been expecting this exact moment.
"Ethan."
Arthur's voice was calm.
"You finally made it."
Ethan didn't move.
"You've been alive this whole time."
Arthur smiled faintly.
"No."
"I've been waiting."
Laura raised her weapon.
"Don't move."
Arthur barely glanced at her.
"The detective."
"You were always going to survive Bell Manor."
Laura frowned.
"You know who I am?"
"I knew your grandfather."
Silence.
Laura had never told anyone her grandfather had once served in military intelligence.
Arthur slowly looked toward Samuel.
"And you."
Samuel lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
Arthur walked closer.
"You kept your promise."
Samuel's eyes filled with tears.
"I almost failed them."
"You didn't."
Arthur finally turned toward Ethan.
"You deserve the truth."
"You've deserved it since the day you were born."
Ethan clenched his fists.
"I don't even know your real name."
Arthur remained silent.
For several seconds.
Then he answered.
"My name..."
"...is Jonathan Reed."
The words echoed through the chamber.
"I never stole Arthur Bell's fortune."
"I inherited his responsibility."
"What responsibility?" Ethan demanded.
Jonathan looked toward the rows of capsules.
"To protect them."
Ethan slowly followed his gaze.
The people emerging from the capsules weren't prisoners.
They were looking around calmly.
Some embraced each other.
Others quietly checked medical monitors beside their capsules.
None of them appeared frightened.
Laura whispered,
"They volunteered."
Jonathan nodded.
"They slept."
"So the world could keep moving."
...
Suddenly...
Every light inside the chamber shut off.
Darkness.
Then emergency lights returned.
Only this time...
Everything had changed.
Every capsule except one stood empty.
The final capsule remained sealed.
Its display flashed repeatedly.
GENETIC MATCH REQUIRED.
Jonathan's expression hardened.
"No."
Samuel looked at him.
"What is it?"
"It wasn't supposed to activate."
Ethan stepped closer.
Inside the final capsule lay a little girl.
Perhaps ten years old.
Peacefully asleep.
Her dark hair framed a face Ethan had never seen before.
Yet something about her seemed familiar.
A monitor above the capsule displayed one name.
EVELYN.
Relationship:
Primary Successor.
Ethan frowned.
"Successor to what?"
Jonathan closed his eyes.
"To me."
...
Outside...
Rodrigo ignored Richard's warnings.
"Move."
His Harvest soldiers advanced toward the tunnel leading into Vault Thirty-One.
Richard remained behind.
He watched the men disappear into the darkness.
Then quietly spoke into an old satellite phone.
"They've entered."
A female voice answered.
"Too late?"
Richard smiled.
"No."
"Exactly on time."
"Should I wake him?"
Richard looked toward the night sky.
"Wake everyone."
The call ended.
Far beyond Bell Manor...
Across five different countries...
Five hidden facilities received the same encrypted signal.
One by one...
Five elderly men opened identical wooden boxes.
Inside each rested a silver ring engraved with a raven standing on a key.
Without hesitation...
Each man put the ring on.
The Bell Guardians had returned.
...
Deep inside the chamber...
Mariana finally entered through a secondary tunnel.
"Ethan!"
He turned.
For a long moment...
Neither spoke.
Months of lies.
Betrayal.
Love.
Regret.
Everything hung silently between them.
Mariana looked exhausted.
She slowly removed her wedding ring from her pocket.
The same ring she had thrown onto Rodrigo's desk.
"I never stopped carrying it."
She held it out.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"I only want one chance to tell you everything."
Before Ethan could answer...
Jonathan interrupted.
"There isn't time."
He looked toward the tunnel entrance.
"They're here."
Heavy footsteps echoed closer.
Harvest.
Dozens of them.
Laura quickly positioned everyone behind stone columns.
Samuel loaded the last magazine into his pistol.
Jonathan calmly walked toward the center of the chamber.
"No one fires."
Laura stared at him.
"They'll kill us."
Jonathan slowly smiled.
"No."
"They came for me."
The tunnel doors exploded inward.
Rodrigo entered first.
Behind him marched more than forty Harvest soldiers.
Weapons raised.
Rodrigo looked directly at Jonathan.
"So..."
"The legend was true."
Jonathan folded his hands behind his back.
"You've spent fifteen years chasing ghosts."
Rodrigo laughed.
"And today..."
"I finally found you."
Jonathan shook his head.
"No."
"You found only an old man."
Rodrigo raised his pistol.
"I found the man who built Project Legacy."
Silence filled the chamber.
Ethan stared at Jonathan.
"You built it?"
Jonathan answered softly.
"No."
"I ended it."
Rodrigo's smile disappeared.
"You failed."
Jonathan looked toward Ethan.
"No."
"I delayed it."
Rodrigo slowly lowered his gun.
"You still don't understand, Ethan."
He reached inside his coat.
Instead of a weapon...
He removed an old photograph.
It showed two newborn babies.
Ethan.
Elijah.
Standing behind the hospital bed...
A smiling young woman.
Mariana.
No.
Not Mariana.
Someone who looked exactly like her.
Rodrigo placed the photograph on the floor.
"Meet your mother."
Mariana stared at the image.
Her face turned completely pale.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Jonathan quietly closed his eyes.
The secret he had buried for thirty-five years...
Had finally reached Ethan.
At that exact moment...
The sleeping little girl inside the final capsule slowly opened her eyes.
She looked directly at Ethan.
Then softly whispered through the capsule glass.
May you like
"Brother..."
Every person in the chamber froze.
