Chapter 9 - The Testimony
Four months later, Megan entered the courtroom holding Jake’s hand.
Their daughter, Grace, had been born healthy six weeks earlier. Emma watched her that morning while Megan prepared to testify.
Lorraine sat beside her attorney.
She looked smaller than Jake remembered, but she still wore the expression of someone who believed she could explain everything away.
The prosecution presented the photographs, medical documentation, phone records, and recordings.
Dr. Reed testified that his meetings with Megan were medical appointments.
Alicia explained the safety plan.
The private investigator described Lorraine’s request for misleading photographs.
Then Megan took the stand.
Lorraine stared at her.
Megan’s voice trembled during the first few questions, but it grew stronger as she continued.
She described how Lorraine had entered the apartment as a helper and slowly taken control. She explained the surveillance, the threats, and the attempt to convince Jake that she was unfaithful.
The prosecutor placed the silver bracelet inside a clear evidence bag.
“Do you recognize this?”
“Yes.”
“How did it come into your possession?”
“It fell from Lorraine’s wrist when I tried to protect my phone.”
Lorraine suddenly stood.
“She is destroying my son’s life!”
The judge ordered her to sit down.
Lorraine pointed toward Jake.
“I raised you. I sacrificed everything for you.”
Jake remained silent.
Her attorney pulled her back into the chair.
The courtroom became still again.
Megan finished her testimony.
Before stepping down, she looked directly at Lorraine.
“You told me no one would believe me,” she said. “You were wrong.”
Lorraine accepted a plea agreement after the judge ruled that the recordings and phone evidence would be admitted. The agreement included a period of incarceration, mandatory treatment, restitution, and a long-term protective order.
Before sentencing, Lorraine was permitted to speak.
She turned toward Jake.
“I only wanted to protect you.”
Jake finally answered.
“You tried to destroy my wife and take my child.”
“I was afraid of losing you.”
“You lost me when you decided love meant ownership.”
Lorraine began to cry.
Years earlier, Jake might have rushed forward to comfort her.
This time, he remained beside Megan.
The judge delivered the sentence.
