Chapter 20 - The Daughter He Tried to Find

The red suitcase contained no clothes.
Inside were copies of adoption records, photographs of Leah growing up, and financial statements from the North Lake Family Reunification Project.
The documents showed that Martin Voss had transferred large payments into shell organizations controlled by members of his family.
Andrew had marked several transactions in red.
One payment was made by Daniel and Celia Mercer shortly before they adopted Leah.
Another came from Lorraine and Andrew’s joint account.
Both couples had paid Martin’s mother.
The suitcase also contained a sealed DNA report.
Andrew Sullivan was listed as the presumed father of Leah Mercer with a probability exceeding 99 percent.
Jake sat silently as Detective Bennett explained what it meant.
Leah was almost certainly his biological sister.
But Andrew had discovered something else.
A trust document placed beneath the report stated that if either Sullivan child was found alive, the remainder of Andrew’s estate would be divided equally between them.
The estate was not enormous. Most of it had been spent years earlier.
However, one asset remained: commercial land near Lake Michigan that had increased dramatically in value.
Martin had managed the trust after Andrew’s death.
He never reported Leah as a beneficiary.
If Leah appeared, years of concealed transactions would be examined.
“That gives him a reason to keep her hidden,” Megan said.
“And a reason to manipulate Lorraine,” Bennett added.
Martin had sent Lorraine selected records about the trust while Jake was deployed. He made her believe Megan and Grace would permanently prevent Leah from receiving her inheritance.
He had weaponized Lorraine’s obsession.
But Lorraine had still chosen every threat, lie, and act of control.
The suitcase offered an explanation.
Not an excuse.
As Bennett prepared to leave, Jake found a prepaid phone beneath the suitcase lining.
Its battery was dead.
A technician restored it.
There was one saved voicemail, received three days earlier.
A woman spoke rapidly.
“My name is Leah Mercer. Martin found me. I’m going somewhere safe, but I don’t know who sent me the photograph of your daughter.”

She paused.
“And Jake, there’s something wrong with the DNA report. I don’t think we’re the only two Sullivan children.”
