Chapter 8 - The Choice Megan Made
Lorraine was charged with several offenses connected to the threats, harassment, unlawful surveillance, and physical mistreatment. A protective order prohibited her from approaching Megan, Jake, Emma, or the apartment.
Yet safety did not repair everything.
When Megan returned home, she refused to sleep in the bedroom.
The room reminded her of locked doors, whispered threats, and the moment Lorraine had told her that Jake would never believe her.
Jake moved a chair into the living room and slept there so Megan could have space.
For days, they spoke only about practical matters.
Medication.
Doctor appointments.
Meals.
The baby’s movements.
Then one night, Megan found Jake sitting on the kitchen floor surrounded by printed screenshots of the anonymous messages.
He looked exhausted.
“I keep reading them,” he said. “I’m trying to understand why I believed them.”
Megan lowered herself carefully into a chair.
“Because she knew what you were afraid of.”
Jake looked up.
“What do you mean?”
“You were afraid the distance would change us. You told me that before you left.”
He remembered the conversation.
Jake’s parents’ marriage had ended in betrayal long before his father’s death. Lorraine had spent years telling Jake that trusting someone completely was dangerous.
“She used something my father did to control me,” he said.
“She used both of us,” Megan replied.
Jake gathered the papers.
“I want to fix this.”
“I don’t know whether you can.”
The honesty hurt, but Jake accepted it.
“I understand.”
Megan placed one hand over her stomach.
“I love you. But when you entered that room, you looked at me like I was already guilty.”
“I know.”
“For a few seconds, I was more afraid of your judgment than I was of her.”
Jake’s eyes filled with tears.
“You never have to forgive me.”
“I’m not deciding that tonight.”
Megan asked Jake to attend counseling with her. She also asked him to stop acting as though one apology could restore their marriage.
Trust, she explained, would require actions repeated over time.
Jake agreed.
He changed the apartment locks. He removed Lorraine from every account and emergency contact list. He reported the situation to his commanding officer rather than allowing Lorraine’s false warnings to control them.
His commanding officer offered support, legal guidance, and additional family leave.
Nothing Lorraine had predicted came true.
Jake did not lose his career.
Megan was not blamed.
