Chapter 1 - The Call That Changed Everything
Three weeks earlier, Jake Sullivan had been sitting inside a temporary military communications office overseas when his phone vibrated.
The message came from an unknown number.
Your wife is not who you think she is.
Beneath the words was a photograph of Megan entering a medical building beside a tall man in a gray coat. The photograph had been taken from across the street. Megan’s face was partly hidden, but Jake recognized her pale-green maternity dress.
The man beside her had one hand near her back as they entered the building.
A second message appeared.
She has been meeting him every Thursday.
Jake stared at the screen.
He and Megan had been married for four years. Before his deployment, they had been trying to start a family. When Megan told him she was pregnant, Jake had cried so loudly during their video call that several soldiers in the next room heard him.
For months, they discussed baby names, nursery colors, and the life they would build after his return.
Then Megan changed.
She began missing calls. When she answered, she often kept the room dark. She blamed exhaustion, nausea, and headaches. Jake believed her because pregnancy was difficult and he hated being too far away to help.
But the photograph created a crack in that trust.
He zoomed in on the man’s face, but the image was too blurry.
Who is he? Jake typed.
The response came seconds later.
Ask your mother. She has seen everything.
Jake called Lorraine.
His mother answered immediately.
“Jake, sweetheart. Is everything all right?”
He hesitated before telling her about the message.
Lorraine became quiet.
That silence frightened him more than any accusation could have.
“Mom?”
“I didn’t want to be the one to tell you,” she finally said.
“Tell me what?”
Lorraine sighed as though she were carrying a painful burden.
“Megan has been acting strangely. She disappears for hours. She won’t tell me where she goes. Last week, I saw her getting into a car with a man.”
Jake stood and walked toward the office window.
“Did you ask her about him?”
“She became defensive. She said it was none of my business.”
That did not sound like Megan.
Megan was direct, sometimes painfully so. She disliked secrets because she had grown up in a family where silence was used to hide every problem.
“I don’t want to believe she would betray you,” Lorraine continued. “But pregnancy can make people emotional. Maybe she feels lonely.”
Jake felt as if someone had pushed the air from his lungs.
Lorraine then softened her voice.
“Come home before you confront her. You need to see the truth with your own eyes.”
Jake requested emergency leave the next morning.
Before boarding the flight, he called Megan.
She declined the call.
A minute later, she sent a message.
I’m tired. Can we talk tomorrow?

Jake looked at the photograph again.
For the first time since their wedding, he wondered whether his wife was afraid to speak to him because she loved someone else.
