Chapter 29 - The Family They Chose
Evelyn Shaw’s face was distributed to law-enforcement agencies across several states.
Martin Voss was charged in connection with financial fraud, evidence tampering, forged court documents, and the concealed adoption records. Caroline Vale agreed to cooperate.
The seventeen families named in Andrew’s files were contacted privately.
Some wanted answers.
Others did not.
Jake finally understood why Andrew’s work had consumed him. His father had been trying to correct a system he had once trusted and indirectly supported.
But Andrew had also repeated the family’s oldest mistake.
He kept dangerous secrets because he believed he could protect everyone alone.
Jake refused to do the same.
He told Megan everything investigators learned. Megan told Leah. Together, they created copies of every record and stored them with separate attorneys.
No single person would ever control the truth again.
The trust was frozen while auditors reconstructed Martin’s transactions. Leah declined any immediate payment.
“I had parents,” she said. “I had a home. I’m not letting Martin turn my life into an invoice.”
Jake smiled.
“You sound like Dad.”
“I wouldn’t know.”
“You will.”
He gave her Andrew’s three letters.
Leah read them alone.
The following morning, she asked whether she could visit Andrew’s grave.
Jake, Megan, Grace, and Leah went together.
Lorraine was not invited.
At the cemetery, Leah placed her silver locket against the headstone.
“I’m angry with him,” she said.
“So am I,” Jake replied.
“But I think he loved us.”
“I think he did.”
It was not complete forgiveness.
It was something more honest.
That evening, Grace took several unsteady steps between Megan and Leah. Everyone laughed when she sat down and demanded to be lifted.
For a few hours, they felt safe.
Then Detective Bennett called.
Evelyn Shaw had been found.
Her car was abandoned near the Canadian border.
