Chapter 3 - The First Warning

The man in the gray coat was Dr. Samuel Reed, a maternal health specialist.

Megan’s regular doctor had referred her to him after noticing dangerous changes in her blood pressure. Because stress could create complications, Dr. Reed asked whether anything at home was making her feel unsafe.

Megan said no.

At the next appointment, he asked again.

This time, Megan cried.

She told him that Lorraine controlled her phone, tracked her movements, and threatened to turn Jake against her. She admitted that Lorraine had grabbed her during an argument and caused her to fall against a table.

Dr. Reed did not press her for graphic details. He simply asked whether she had somewhere safe to stay.

Megan’s parents lived in another state. Her sister shared a small apartment with roommates. Jake’s military assignment made communication unreliable, and Lorraine had convinced Megan that revealing the situation could place him in danger.

“I don’t know what to do,” Megan whispered.

Dr. Reed contacted a hospital social worker named Alicia Moreno.

Alicia helped Megan create a safety plan. She provided numbers Megan could call, arranged private transportation, and documented everything Megan reported. She also encouraged Megan to preserve messages and photographs somewhere Lorraine could not access.

Megan began storing evidence in an online account under a new password.

That was why she visited the medical building every Thursday.

Those appointments were not secret meetings with another man.

They were the only hours when Megan felt safe enough to speak.

But Lorraine noticed the change.

She followed Megan to the clinic and photographed her entering beside Dr. Reed. Then she cropped the hospital sign from the image.

That evening, Lorraine waited in the apartment.

“Who is he?”

Megan stopped near the doorway.

“My doctor.”

“Your doctor’s office is across town.”

“He is a specialist.”

Lorraine walked closer.

“Does Jake know?”

“He knows I have appointments.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Megan tried to move past her, but Lorraine blocked the hallway.

“You’re building a story against me,” Lorraine said. “You think a few conversations with strangers can erase everything I’ve done for my son.”

“This is not about Jake. This is about what you’re doing to me.”

Lorraine’s expression hardened.

“Without me, Jake would never have become the man he is.”

“And without me, you would not have access to this apartment.”

Lorraine shoved the door closed before Megan could leave.

The movement was sudden enough to make Megan step backward.

“You are carrying my grandson,” Lorraine said. “That gives me every reason to be here.”

“You don’t even know whether the baby is a boy.”

Lorraine smiled.

“I know more than you think.”

That sentence stayed with Megan all night.

The next morning, she discovered that the sealed envelope containing the baby’s private test results had been opened.
