Chapter 8 - THE NURSE WHO REMEMBERED

Grace Bell lived alone outside the city.

She opened the door and nearly shut it again when she heard the name Hale.

Liam stopped her.

“My mother was Lydia Moore.”

Grace froze.

Twenty minutes later, they were sitting in her kitchen.

Grace’s hands trembled around a cup of tea.

“I was twenty-six when you were born,” she told Liam. “I worked the night shift.”

She remembered Lydia clearly.

Weak.

Terrified.

Constantly asking whether Robert had survived his car accident.

“She loved you,” Grace said. “Whatever else you discover, never doubt that.”

Liam looked down.

Grace explained what happened next.

Howard’s attorney arrived with hospital administrators.

Records were changed.

Staff were told the mother and infant were being transferred.

Grace later learned Lydia had been taken to a charity clinic.

The baby disappeared.

“I found out years later that Evelyn Hale was searching for you,” Grace continued. “I agreed to testify.”

“But you never did,” Olivia said.

Grace’s eyes filled with shame.

“Someone photographed my daughter walking home from school.”

The room went silent.

Grace received an envelope the next morning containing the photograph.

No message.

None was necessary.

“I became afraid.”

Liam stared through the window.

Another adult who had known.

Another adult who had been frightened into silence.

Grace suddenly stood.

“There’s something else.”

She brought out a sealed plastic bag.

Inside was an old hospital bracelet.

BABY MOORE.

And on its reverse side was a handwritten number.

A medical file number.

Robert photographed it.

Grace touched Liam’s hand.

“Your mother survived much longer than they told everyone.”

Liam looked up.

“How long?”

May you like

Grace swallowed.

“Almost eleven months.”
