Chapter 5 - THE ENVELOPE BEHIND THE FRAME

Three weeks after the truth changed Olivia Hale’s family forever, the house finally became quiet again.

Not peaceful.

Just quiet.

Liam Reed had stopped being Olivia’s boyfriend the moment they learned Robert Hale was his biological father. DNA testing later confirmed what the old necklace, the hidden letters, and Robert’s memories had already made almost impossible to deny.

Liam was Robert’s son.

Olivia’s half-brother.

Robert tried to give everyone space.

Sarah tried to keep the family from breaking.

Olivia tried not to remember the days when Liam’s hand had fit naturally inside hers.

And Liam tried to understand how someone could gain a father and lose an entire version of his life at the same time.

Then one Sunday morning, Robert removed an old family photograph from the hallway wall.

Something fell from behind the frame.

A yellow envelope.

Robert picked it up.

His face changed when he recognized the handwriting.

His late mother, Evelyn Hale, had written his name across the front.

Robert opened it slowly.

Inside was one sentence.

Robert, if the boy named Liam ever comes home, do not trust your father’s version of what happened.

Robert stopped breathing.

Olivia stared at him.

“Grandma knew?”

Robert turned the envelope over.

On the back was another message.

There is something waiting for him in Locker 317 at Central Station.

Liam had been standing near the doorway.

He stepped forward.

“What’s in the locker?”

Robert looked at his son.

“I think we’re about to find out why someone worked so hard to erase you.”
