Chapter 22 - SARAH’S DECISION
The scandal ended.
But Sarah and Robert’s marriage remained wounded.
One evening Sarah placed two suitcases near the bedroom door.
Robert stared at them.
“Are you leaving?”
“For a while.”
His face fell.
Sarah touched his arm.
“This isn’t punishment.”
“I should have told you about Lydia.”
“Yes.”
“I should have told you about the child I thought died.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
“I know.”
Sarah explained that loving Robert did not erase the fact that he had hidden an entire part of himself throughout their marriage.
“I need to choose you again,” she said. “Not simply remain because leaving feels harder.”
Robert nodded.
“I’ll wait.”
“No.”
He looked confused.
“Don’t wait. Work.”
So Robert did.
He began therapy.
He stopped treating guilt as proof of love.
He apologized without asking for immediate forgiveness.
He learned to speak about Lydia without fearing that honoring his past insulted Sarah.
Months passed.
Sarah returned for family dinners.
Then weekends.
One night Liam asked her privately:
“Are you coming home?”
Sarah smiled.
“I think I am.”
“Because you forgive him?”
“Because he finally understands forgiveness isn’t something he can demand.”
Liam nodded.
“That sounds like Dad.”
Sarah studied him.
“You call him that easily now.”
Liam smiled.
“Not easily.”
There was a difference.
Sarah returned home the following week.
Robert did not celebrate dramatically.
He simply carried her bags upstairs.
