Chapter 5 - The Envelope After the Applause

By midnight, the Grand Aurelia ballroom was nearly empty.

The survivors who had spoken at Clara's foundation gala had gone home. Volunteers were stacking folders. Hotel employees were clearing glasses from tables decorated with soft blue flowers.

Six months earlier, Clara had fled this ballroom in a wedding dress.

Tonight, she had walked across its stage without fear.

That should have been the end of the story.

Clara almost believed it was.

Elias stood near the elevators speaking quietly with Marianne when Daniel, the hotel manager, approached Clara carrying a cream-colored envelope.

“Miss Voss?”

Clara turned.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“This was delivered to the front desk about twenty minutes ago. The person specifically asked that it be given to you after your speech.”

“Who delivered it?”

“A courier.”

“Name?”

“He wouldn't give one.”

Clara's stomach tightened.

She looked toward her father.

Elias noticed immediately.

He ended his conversation and crossed the room.

“What is it?”

Clara showed him the envelope.

Her name was typed across the front.

No return address.

Marianne joined them.

“Don't open it yet,” she said.

Daniel called security.

The envelope was inspected before Rachel Moore, still head of security at the Aurelia, brought it back.

“No electronics. Nothing dangerous.”

Clara opened it.

Inside were two things.

A photograph.

And a handwritten note.

The photograph was old.

At least twenty years old.

Four people stood outside a courthouse.

Clara recognized her mother immediately.

Isabelle Voss looked younger, her dark hair tied behind her shoulders, a legal folder pressed against her chest.

Beside her stood Malcolm Whitlock.

Clara stopped breathing.

Elias took the photograph.

For the first time that evening, his calm expression disappeared.

“No,” he whispered.

Clara looked at him.

“You knew they knew each other?”

“No.”

Marianne took the picture.

Her face changed too.

“I've seen this case.”

“What case?” Clara asked.

Marianne didn't answer immediately.

Clara unfolded the note.

Only one sentence had been written.

YOUR MOTHER KNEW WHAT THE WHITLOCKS WERE LONG BEFORE YOU MET ADRIAN.

Beneath it was another line.

ASK MARIANNE ABOUT GREYHAVEN.

Clara slowly raised her eyes.

Marianne had gone pale.

Elias noticed.

“What is Greyhaven?”

Marianne closed her eyes.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then she said something Clara had never expected.

“Something Isabelle made me promise never to tell you about.”

The ballroom suddenly felt colder.

Clara stared at the woman who had protected her since her wedding night.

“You told me my mother trusted you.”

“She did.”

“Then why are you keeping secrets from us?”

Marianne looked toward Elias.

“This one wasn't mine to reveal.”

Elias's voice hardened.

“Isabelle is gone.”

“I know.”

“And my daughter has already nearly been destroyed because people thought silence was protection.”

That landed.

Marianne lowered her eyes.

Then she looked at Clara.

“Greyhaven wasn't a company.”

“What was it?”

“A file.”

Marianne paused.

“A file your mother believed could destroy several powerful families.”

Clara looked again at the photograph.

Malcolm Whitlock was smiling beside Isabelle.

Twenty years later, his son had married Isabelle's daughter.

Suddenly Clara no longer believed that had been a coincidence.
