Chapter 24 - The Last Secret
Marianne arrived at Isabelle House carrying one final box.
Clara groaned.
“No.”
Marianne looked confused.
“No what?”
“No more secret boxes. No more hidden vaults. No more mysterious letters from dead people.”
Elias laughed.
Marianne almost did.
“This one isn't dangerous.”
“That's what everyone says before Chapter Twenty-Four.”
Marianne placed it down.
Inside were Isabelle's personal effects from the old law firm.
Photographs.
A fountain pen.
Court badges.
University notes.
At the bottom was a video cassette.

They converted it.
That evening Clara and Elias watched together.
Onscreen, Isabelle sat on the floor of the Connecticut cabin.
Four-year-old Clara ran around wearing a yellow raincoat indoors.
Elias's younger voice could be heard behind the camera.
“Clara, your coat goes outside.”
“No!”
“Strong legal argument,” Isabelle said.
Little Clara climbed into her mother's lap.
Isabelle looked toward the camera.
“She gets this from you.”
“Absolutely not.”
“She has your stubbornness.”
“She has your refusal to admit defeat.”
Little Clara suddenly asked:
“Mommy, am I rich?”
Elias and Isabelle both burst out laughing.
Apparently Clara had heard someone talking.
Isabelle answered.
“You are loved.”
“Is that rich?”
“The richest.”
Clara watching the recording began crying.
Onscreen, four-year-old Clara asked:
“Will Daddy always be here?”
Isabelle smiled at the camera.
“He'd better be.”
Young Elias answered:
“Always.”
The video ended.
No conspiracy.
No hidden account.
No dangerous revelation.
Only a family.
Clara leaned against her father's shoulder.
After everything, her mother's final secret wasn't a weapon.
It was a memory.
Elias whispered:
“I had forgotten that day.”
“So had I.”
They sat quietly.
Then Clara removed the brass key from her mother's locket.
The key that had opened Box 417.
She placed it beside the old videotape.
“No more locked boxes.”
