Chapter 12 - Clara Stops Being the Target

For two days, Clara didn't leave Elias's house.
On the third morning, she walked into Voss Holdings.
The building had no giant logo.
Of course it didn't.
That was Elias.
Quiet power.
Employees recognized Clara now.
Some tried not to stare.
She entered the boardroom where Elias, Marianne and three investigators were waiting.
“I want a role.”
Elias looked surprised.
“In the investigation?”
“In Halcyon.”
“Clara—”
“No.”
She sat across from him.
“They've spent years treating me like a key someone could marry, manipulate or frighten into opening a door.”
She placed her mother's locket on the table.
“I want to know what I own.”
Elias nodded slowly.
“Then I'll show you.”
For the next week, Clara learned.
Halcyon wasn't merely a trust.
It held legacy assets Isabelle had separated from Voss Holdings during its early growth.
Some produced revenue.
Some held intellectual property.
Some were dormant.
One subsidiary owned old legal recovery rights connected to Greyhaven.
That was the real prize.
If activated, those rights could allow Halcyon to pursue assets transferred illegally decades earlier.
Vivienne didn't simply want Clara's money.
She wanted to prevent Clara from recovering hers.
Potentially hundreds of millions stolen from investors.
Including money that had flowed through the Sterling family.
Then an accountant found something.
A recent access request.
Someone had tried to activate a dormant Halcyon portal three weeks before Clara's wedding.
Credentials used:
CLARA VOSS.
Her identity had been stolen before the ceremony.
The account had been blocked because the biometric verification failed.
Marianne looked at Clara.
“The marriage agreement wasn't supposed to give them the money.”
Clara understood.
“It was supposed to give Adrian legal authority to complete the verification.”
“Yes.”
Elias's face hardened.
The wedding night suddenly became something larger.
Had Clara signed, Adrian could have claimed spousal financial authorization.
The Whitlocks might have gained temporary access before anyone understood what happened.
Clara felt sick.
Then something else.
Anger.
Clean anger.
Not fear.
“Can we identify who submitted the fake request?”
The accountant nodded.
“We traced the device.”
“Where?”
He turned the screen.
The access attempt had originated from an office inside Whitlock Capital.
Registered user:
Thomas Bell.
Clara stood.
“Then we stop chasing their story.”
May you like
Everyone looked at her.
“We give them something to chase.”
