Chapter 23 - The House Isabelle Wanted

Clara's foundation purchased an old school building in Manhattan.
Not a hotel.
Not a mansion.
Not something designed to impress donors.
A practical building with thirty temporary apartments, legal offices, childcare rooms, therapy spaces and classrooms.
Women leaving financially controlling or abusive relationships could stay there while rebuilding.
Clara named it Isabelle House.
Elias saw the sign before the opening ceremony.
He stopped walking.
Clara watched him.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She smiled.
“Emotional dust?”
“Severe case.”
He wiped his eyes.
Inside the lobby hung no portrait of Isabelle.
Clara didn't want a monument.
Instead, one sentence appeared on a small brass plaque.
LOVE SHOULD NEVER SHRINK YOU.
Those words became the building's purpose.
During the opening, reporters surrounded Clara.
One asked whether Isabelle House was her response to the Whitlock family.
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
“A response to everyone who thinks leaving is impossible because they have nowhere to go.”
Another reporter shouted:
“Do you feel vindicated?”
Clara thought about Adrian.
Vivienne.
Jonathan.
The ruined wedding.
The cameras.
The courtroom.
Then she looked at a woman entering Isabelle House with two children and a suitcase.
“No.”
Clara smiled.
“I feel useful.”
That night, after everyone left, Clara found Elias sitting alone in the lobby.
“What are you doing?”
“Waiting.”
“For what?”
“For you.”
She sat beside him.
It was the same answer he had given her his entire life without saying it.
I will always come.

Sometimes love wasn't dramatic.
Sometimes it simply stayed.
