Chapter 16 - The First Office

Greyhaven began at Pier 14.

Not in a bank.

Not in a boardroom.

In a converted shipping warehouse near the Hudson River.

Jonathan Sterling had used it as his first office.

The building had been abandoned for years.

Investigators searched it.

Nothing.

Then Clara remembered Isabelle's phrase.

The house where the water doesn't move.

Everyone had assumed reservoir.

But an old Greyhaven document referred to Pier 14 by its accounting code.

STILLWATER.

The warehouse was the house where the water didn't move.

Clara joined investigators at the site.

Behind a false brick wall, they found a narrow steel door.

Inside was a room untouched for decades.

Paper records.

Photographs.

Ledgers.

Hundreds of files.

But the Greyhaven Ledger was missing.

On one desk sat a laptop.

New.

Clara walked closer.

The screen turned on automatically.

Jonathan appeared.

Recorded video.

“If you're watching this, Clara, you've inherited Isabelle's most irritating quality.”

Clara clenched her jaw.

“You don't stop.”

Jonathan smiled at the camera.

“Your mother believed truth was sacred. Your father believes accountability is strength. Charming ideas.”

He leaned forward.

“But fortunes are not built by innocent people.”

A list appeared onscreen.

Names.

Politicians.

Bankers.

Investors.

Executives.

Some dead.

Some still powerful.

Jonathan continued.

“The ledger can destroy all of them.”

Clara understood.

He wasn't hiding evidence.

He was holding it hostage.

“Twenty-four hours,” Jonathan said.

“Transfer Halcyon's Greyhaven recovery rights to the entity listed on the screen. In return, I release the ledger privately to your attorneys.”

He smiled.

“Refuse, and I publish everything without context. Including documents that will make your father look like one of us.”

The video ended.

Elias looked at Clara.

“What do you want to do?”

She thought about it.

Then smiled faintly.

“Nothing.”

Marianne blinked.

“Nothing?”

“He gave us twenty-four hours because he needs something.”

“Yes.”

“So he isn't in control.”

Clara looked around the room her mother had once investigated.

“We are.”
