Chapter 11 - The Marriage Was Only Phase One
Adrian finally told investigators everything.
Not because he became good.
Because he became afraid.
Vivienne's plan had three phases.
Phase one was the marriage.
Adrian would marry Clara.
Phase two was financial integration.
The revised marital agreement would provide access to enough information to identify Halcyon's custodians.
Phase three had never been explained to him.
“My mother always said, ‘Once Halcyon opens, everything comes home.’”
Clara stared across the table.
“Home to whom?”
“She thought the money belonged to our family.”
“It didn't.”
“I know.”
“You keep saying that now.”
Adrian accepted the hit.
He deserved it.
Then he gave Clara something more valuable.
A name.
Jonathan Sterling.
Vivienne's older brother.
Everyone believed Jonathan had died nineteen years earlier.
Adrian had discovered three years ago that he was alive.
Living under another name.
“Why fake his death?” Marianne asked later.
“Greyhaven,” Elias said.
Jonathan Sterling had managed several shell companies through which investor money disappeared.
Isabelle's old notes identified him repeatedly.
If he was alive, Vivienne wasn't simply hiding from justice.
She might be going to him.
Using private financial databases, Elias's investigators found a possible identity.
John Stellan.
Owner of a small maritime storage company in Rhode Island.
Clara looked at his photograph.
Older.
Heavier.
But unmistakably related to Vivienne.
“Do the authorities know?”
“They do now,” Marianne said.
Clara stood.
“I want nothing hidden anymore.”
Elias looked at her.
“Agreed.”
“No private retaliation.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Clara.”
“Dad.”
“I was going to say agreed.”
“You paused.”
“I was offended by the implication.”
She almost smiled.
That mattered.
Even inside the darkness, she could still smile.
The next morning, federal investigators searched the Rhode Island property.
John Stellan was gone.
But they found photographs of Clara.
Dozens.
Taken over five years.
Outside her office.
At restaurants.
Entering Elias's home.
Meeting Adrian.
One photograph showed Clara and Adrian on their first date.
Written on the back:
CONTACT ESTABLISHED.
Another:
TARGET TRUSTS HIM.
And the final photograph, taken two weeks before the wedding:
SIGNATURE EXPECTED AFTER CEREMONY.
Clara dropped it.
Elias caught her before she stepped backward.
