Chapter 9 - Vanessa’s Bargain

Eleanor had spent eighteen months believing Rachel was being held for her own protection.
That was the story Charles told her.
He claimed dangerous people were searching for Rachel because she had stolen classified data. If Daniel learned she was alive, he would lead those people to her.
Eleanor accepted the explanation because accepting it was easier than confronting the truth.
“Did you ever see her?” Daniel asked.
“Twice.”
“Where?”
“At a medical facility.”
“Was she free to leave?”
Eleanor began crying.
“No.”
“Then you knew she was a prisoner.”
“She was ill.”
“What kind of illness?”
“They said she was confused and violent.”
“Who said that?”
“Your father.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
Charles remained in the library under police supervision after Detective Cole arrived with a warrant.
The guards denied knowing anything about Rachel or Orpheus. Both claimed they were instructed only to prevent Daniel from leaving until Charles had finished speaking with him.
Detective Cole separated the family members for questioning.
Eleanor gave Daniel the only useful information she possessed.
Three nights earlier, she saw Vanessa arrive at the estate shortly after midnight.
Vanessa and Charles argued in the library.
Eleanor listened from the hallway.
“She said the plan had changed,” Eleanor explained. “She said Adrian was going to kill Rachel after the transfer.”
“What did Dad say?”
“He told her Rachel had become unnecessary.”
“And Vanessa?”
“She threatened to take the children and expose everything.”
“So Vanessa knew Rachel was alive.”
“Yes.”
“Did she say where Rachel was being held?”
“No. But she mentioned a doctor named Kessler.”
Detective Cole searched medical licensing databases.
There were six physicians named Kessler in the region.
Only one had lost his license.
Dr. Julian Kessler, a psychiatrist accused of conducting unapproved drug trials on vulnerable patients.
His clinic closed nine years earlier.
The building had since been converted into a private rehabilitation center called Grayhaven.
Mrs. Gray.
The lady with Mommy’s voice.
Daniel remembered Noah’s description.
The name was not a person.
It was a place.
Police teams surrounded Grayhaven before noon.
The facility stood behind stone walls in a wooded valley. Its official records listed only four long-term patients.
Inside, police found twenty-one rooms.
Most were empty.
Three contained heavily sedated individuals with no valid admission documents.
Rachel was not among them.
Dr. Kessler was found in his office, unconscious from an apparent overdose.
A note on his desk read:
THE PATIENT WAS REMOVED UNDER FAMILY AUTHORITY.
Security footage had been erased.
But an employee recognized Vanessa from a photograph.
“She came for Patient Seven,” the nurse said.
“When?” Detective Cole asked.
“Tuesday morning.”
“Was Patient Seven Rachel Mercer?”
“We weren’t given names.”
“Describe her.”
“Female, late thirties, brown hair, facial scarring near the right jaw.”
Rachel would now be thirty-nine.
The nurse continued.
“She rarely spoke. But three weeks ago, her medication was reduced after a supply problem. She became more alert.”
“What did she say?”
“She kept asking for Lily.”
Daniel looked away.
Detective Cole asked, “Who accompanied Vanessa?”
“A man with a scar.”
Adrian Vale.
“Where did they take the patient?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did they sign discharge papers?”
The nurse handed over a digital tablet.
The authorization had been signed by Daniel.
Another forgery.
Police searched the facility.
In Rachel’s former room, Daniel found hundreds of tiny lines scratched into the wall.
One for each day of captivity.
Near the bed, hidden beneath loose flooring, was a folded strip of fabric.
Rachel had written on it with blue ink.
VANESSA IS NOT THE BEGINNING.
Daniel gave the message to Detective Cole.
“What does it mean?” she asked.
“It means my sister may have helped them, but she didn’t create this.”
His phone rang from a blocked number.
Daniel answered.
Vanessa spoke.
Her breathing sounded uneven.
“Are the children alive?”
“Yes.”
“Noah?”
“He’s recovering.”
She began crying.
“I never meant for him to get that sick.”
“You drugged him.”
“Adrian controlled the doses.”
“You gave them to him.”
“If I refused, they threatened Lily.”
“You threatened Lily yourself.”
“To keep her quiet.”
“You bruised her.”
“I know.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
There was no apology large enough to contain what she had done.
“Where is Rachel?”
“I can take you to her.”
“Tell me now.”
“I need protection.”
“You need prison.”
“I need to stay alive long enough to explain.”
“Explain what?”
“Why Rachel chose me.”
Daniel’s anger faltered.
May you like
“Chose you for what?”
“To replace her.”
