Chapter 13 - The Voice Under the Water

The lake was colder than Daniel expected.
He sank beneath the surface as bullets struck the dock above him.
For several seconds, he saw nothing but darkness and bubbles.
Then the submerged lights came on.
A cable glowed beneath the water, leading toward a steel structure anchored near the lakebed.
Daniel followed it.
His lungs tightened.
Behind him, a second body entered the water.
Rachel.
Her hands were free.
Somehow, during the gunfight, she had escaped Adrian.
She reached Daniel and pointed toward the submerged structure.
A panel had opened.
Inside was a breathing mask.
Only one.
Rachel pushed it toward Daniel.
He shook his head and gave it to her.
She refused.
They struggled silently until Rachel pressed the mask against his face and forced him to breathe.
Then she pointed upward and swam toward the structure.
Daniel followed.
Inside, an air pocket filled the upper portion of a maintenance chamber.
They surfaced together.
Rachel gasped, clinging to a metal rail.
Above them, gunfire continued.
Daniel touched her face.
She was real.
Not a photograph.
Not a voice on a recording.
Real.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
He pulled her into his arms.
For a moment, the war outside ceased to exist.
Rachel held him tightly, then pushed him back.
“Lily and Noah?”
“Alive. Noah is in the hospital.”
“What did they do to him?”
“Sedatives. Starvation.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Vanessa?”
“She helped them.”
“I know.”
“You chose her.”
“I chose who she pretended to be.”
Daniel wanted to ask a hundred questions.
Why Rachel kept the truth from him.
Why she trusted Vanessa.
Why she created a plan that depended on their children surviving inside a house controlled by enemies.
But the chamber vibrated.
A digital panel activated.
ORPHEUS RECOVERY SEQUENCE PENDING.
Rachel wiped water from her face.
“This is the real key.”
“What is the silver device?”
“A trigger. It wakes the network.”
“Charles needs founder authorization.”
“Yes.”
“Can he activate it?”
“Not without us.”
“What happens if no one completes the sequence?”
“The network erases itself.”
“Then let it.”
Rachel looked at him.
“It also erases every Nightingale unit currently deployed.”
“How many?”
“More than four thousand.”
“In hospitals and refugee camps?”
“Yes.”
“If they shut down?”
“Some communities lose clean water within hours.”
Daniel understood the trap.
Orpheus had linked destruction to humanitarian dependence.
Save the network, and risk giving someone the contamination capability.
Destroy it, and remove clean water from millions of vulnerable people.
“Can we separate the purification system from the cascade command?”
“I tried. That’s why they kept me alive.”
“Did you succeed?”
“Almost.”
A microphone activated above the panel.
Charles’s voice filled the chamber.
“Rachel, complete the founder transfer.”
She looked upward.
“No.”
“If you refuse, Vale’s remaining men will kill Lily.”
Daniel moved toward the panel.
“How do we know she’s alive?”
A camera feed appeared.
Lily crouched behind Detective Cole near a police vehicle.
They were under fire, but alive.
Charles stood behind a stone wall holding the silver terminal.
Adrian was no longer visible.
Charles spoke through it.
“Give me control, and I end this.”
“You created this,” Daniel said.
“I created Nightingale to protect civilization.”
“You created Orpheus to control it.”
“There is no protection without control.”
Rachel studied the panel.
Daniel recognized the expression she wore when solving complex problems.
“What are you thinking?”
“There may be another authorization path.”
“What path?”
“When I designed the lock, I included a witness protocol.”
“For whom?”
“Our children.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You built this around Lily and Noah?”
“I built it around the possibility that we would be compromised.”
“They’re children.”
“They were never meant to use it now.”
The panel displayed three authorization symbols.
Founder.
Architect.
Heir.
Charles possessed founder status.
Rachel was the architect.
Daniel had secondary authorization through marriage and corporate ownership.
But heir authorization belonged to Lily and Noah.
“What happens if the heir protocol activates?” Daniel asked.
“Control transfers to a blind trust until both children reach adulthood.”
“Who manages the trust?”
Rachel hesitated.
“That’s the problem.”
“Who?”
“Eleanor.”
Daniel thought of his mother’s silence.
Her visits to Rachel’s prison.
Her years beside Charles.
“Can we trust her?”
Rachel looked at the camera feed.
May you like
Eleanor appeared at the edge of the trees.
She was holding Noah.
