Chapter 7 - The Signature Made While He Slept

Daniel called the company’s chief legal officer from the quiet house.
“Freeze everything,” he said.
Elaine Porter sounded shaken.
“We’re trying. The authorization was filed through the emergency succession system.”
“That requires biometric verification.”
“It received biometric verification.”
“Impossible.”
“The system recorded your face, voice, and fingerprint.”
“I was at the hospital.”
“I know.”
“Then someone copied my identity.”
“There’s another problem.”
Daniel stepped away from the police officers.
“What?”
“The transfer protocol was created eight years ago.”
“I didn’t create it.”
“The authorization carries Rachel’s digital certificate.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Rachel had served as Mercer Global’s financial director before Noah was born. She designed many of the company’s internal security procedures.
Her certificate should have been deactivated after her death.
“Who restored it?”
“We don’t know. But the request originated from inside headquarters.”
“Lock down the building.”
“Security is doing that now.”
“Who owns Orpheus?”
“The public records lead through six shell corporations.”
“Keep searching.”
“There’s more. The transfer doesn’t just include company shares. It includes Project Nightingale.”
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
Project Nightingale was a compact water purification system designed for disaster zones. Mercer Global had developed the technology under a confidential government contract.
The device could convert heavily contaminated water into safe drinking water with minimal energy.
Used correctly, it could save millions of lives.
Used differently, its filtration membranes could isolate and concentrate certain chemical compounds.
Only twelve people knew the complete design.
“What exactly transferred?” Daniel asked.
“Patent control, prototype access, and deployment authority.”
“Stop it.”
“We may have less than twelve hours before the foreign registration becomes permanent.”
Daniel ended the call and explained the situation to Detective Cole.
“Could Rachel have discovered someone was targeting the project?” she asked.
“She controlled the patent filings. If anyone manipulated them, she would know.”
“Why didn’t she tell you?”
“Maybe she tried.”
Daniel remembered the final month before her accident.
Rachel had been distracted.
She changed passwords repeatedly.
She asked Daniel whether the company’s emergency transfer system could be activated without him.
He had laughed and said no.
Three nights before she died, she woke him at two in the morning.
“Promise me you’ll never sign anything Vanessa gives you,” she said.
Daniel assumed the sisters had argued.
He promised.
Then he forgot.
Until now.
Police recovered additional files from the quiet house.
One folder contained copies of Daniel’s travel calendar.
Another held recordings of his voice, organized by individual words and phrases.
A workstation had been used to train an artificial voice model.
On a shelf, technicians found a silicone fingerprint mold.
Someone had collected everything necessary to impersonate him.
“They’ve been preparing this for years,” Daniel said.
Detective Cole nodded.
“Your children may have been used to study your responses and bypass family verification questions.”
Daniel thought of Lily being forced to practice answers for a judge.
Noah wearing a hidden microphone.
The sedatives.
The staged illness.
Vanessa had not simply neglected them.
She had controlled them.
Conditioned them.
Turned them into tools.
But the recording suggested she was not the person in command.
A man had threatened the children.
Adrian Vale.
Daniel returned to the hospital near midnight.
Lily slept in a chair beside Noah’s bed.
Her pink notebook rested under her arm.
Daniel gently removed it and continued reading.
One entry described the quiet house.
Aunt Vanessa took Noah away. She said he was going to help Daddy keep his company. I followed them to the garage, but Mrs. Gray caught me.
Another entry:
Mrs. Gray knows Mommy’s song. She sings it wrong on purpose.
Then:
Mrs. Gray showed me a picture of Daddy sleeping. She said she can make Daddy say anything.
Near the back, Daniel found an envelope glued between two pages.
Inside was a small memory card.
Written beneath it were the words:
FOR DADDY WHEN HE FINALLY BELIEVES ME.
Daniel inserted the card into his laptop.
It contained a single video.
The image showed Vanessa standing in Daniel’s office at night.
Adrian Vale stood beside her.
A third person sat behind Daniel’s desk, mostly hidden from the camera.
Vanessa placed documents on the table.
“I’ve done everything you asked,” she said. “The children are terrified. Daniel trusts me. Rachel is contained.”
The seated figure replied, “Then why is Lily keeping records?”
“I’ll find them.”
“You said that last month.”
“I need more time.”
“You have until Daniel returns.”
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“And after the transfer?”
“You disappear.”
“With the children?”
The figure laughed softly.
“No, Vanessa. You were never keeping the children.”
Vanessa stared at the person.
“You promised.”
“I promised you a new life.”
Vanessa took a step backward.
The seated figure leaned into the light.
Daniel paused the video.
The face was older than he remembered, but instantly recognizable.
May you like
His father.
Charles Mercer.
