Chapter 10 - The Replacement
Vanessa instructed Daniel to come alone to an abandoned church near the river.
Detective Cole refused to allow it.
“She may be setting a trap.”
“She knows where Rachel is.”
“Then we track the call and locate her.”
“The number is blocked.”
“We can still attempt it.”
“She said she’ll disappear if she sees police.”
“She already participated in kidnapping and child abuse.”
“I know what she did.”
“Then stop treating her as your sister.”
Daniel looked through the observation window into Noah’s room.
Lily sat beside her brother, reading him a picture book.
“I stopped knowing who my sister was a long time ago.”
Detective Cole placed a tracking device beneath Daniel’s collar and positioned officers around the church.
Daniel entered through a side door.
Broken stained glass covered the floor.
Vanessa stood near the altar.
Her clothes were dirty. A bandage wrapped her left hand, and dried blood marked her cheek.
She held no visible weapon.
“You brought police,” she said.
“They’re staying outside.”
“You were supposed to come alone.”
“You lost the right to give instructions when you drugged my son.”
Vanessa flinched.
“Is he awake?”
“Yes.”
“Does he remember?”
“Enough.”
She looked down.
Daniel remained near the door.
“Where is Rachel?”
“Adrian took her.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel turned to leave.
“Wait.”
“You said you could take me to her.”
“I can take you to where he plans to exchange her.”
“For what?”
“The Nightingale key.”
Daniel faced her again.
“What did you mean when you said Rachel chose you?”
Vanessa sat on a broken pew.
“Two years ago, Rachel came to me. She said someone inside Mercer Global was altering Nightingale’s deployment code. She believed your father was involved.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“She tried. Every time she prepared to show you evidence, something happened. Your schedule changed. A child became sick. A client emergency appeared.”
“Because you were interfering.”
“At first, no.”
“At first?”
Vanessa wiped blood from her cheek.
“Rachel thought your communications were monitored. She needed someone the family trusted but Orpheus underestimated.”
“You.”
“She asked me to act jealous of her. To argue with her in public. To make your father believe I resented your marriage.”
Daniel remembered years of tension between the two women.
Vanessa criticizing Rachel’s parenting.
Rachel refusing to invite Vanessa on family holidays.
He had believed the hostility was real.
“It was an act?”
“Some of it.”
“What part was real?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with shame.
“I did resent her.”
“For what?”
“She had everything.”
“So you betrayed her.”
“Not immediately.”
Vanessa explained that Rachel discovered Charles was searching for a physical encryption device known as the Nightingale key.
The key could control the hidden cascade function.
Rachel created three false keys and distributed them through different channels.
She told Vanessa only one thing about the real device.
It would remain close to Daniel without his knowledge.
After Rachel’s staged accident, Vanessa was supposed to move into Daniel’s home and protect the children while secretly searching for evidence of where Rachel had been taken.
“Instead, you joined them,” Daniel said.
“I thought I could negotiate.”
“With people who kidnapped her?”
“With our father.”
“You knew what he was.”
“No. Not then.”
Vanessa said Charles promised Rachel would be released after the key was recovered.
Months passed.
Rachel remained imprisoned.
Adrian began visiting the house.
Charles ordered Vanessa to document Daniel’s behavior and prepare custody evidence in case Daniel discovered the truth.
“When did you start hurting the children?” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked toward the broken windows.
“When Lily saw Rachel.”
“That was months ago.”
“Yes.”
“You grabbed her hard enough to bruise her.”
“I panicked.”
“You locked up food.”
“Adrian said hungry children were easier to control.”
“But you obeyed him.”
“Yes.”
“You gave Noah sedatives.”
“Yes.”
“You told Lily I would throw her away.”
Vanessa began crying.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s voice remained cold.
“You don’t get to hide behind fear. They trusted you.”
“I know.”
“No. You know you were caught.”
Vanessa reached inside her coat.
Daniel tensed.
She slowly removed the torn notebook page.
The page Lily said was missing.
Vanessa handed it to him.
Lily had drawn a woman outside her bedroom window.
Beneath the drawing, Rachel had written a message in tiny letters.
THE KEY IS WHERE DANIEL FIRST PROMISED TO COME HOME.
Daniel read the sentence repeatedly.
“What does it mean?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel thought of every promise he had made Rachel.
Hotels.
Airports.
Hospitals.
Their first apartment.
Then he remembered their wedding day.
Rachel had been afraid his work would always come first.
During their vows, Daniel added a private sentence not included in the ceremony.
No matter where the company sends me, home will always be wherever you are.
They were married beside a lake at his family’s old summer property.
The house had been abandoned for years.
“The lake house,” he said.
Vanessa stood.
“If the key is there, Adrian will know.”
“How?”
“He has Rachel.”
“She won’t tell him.”
“He has another way.”
“What way?”
Vanessa looked toward the entrance.

Vanessa fell.
