FOURTEEN MONTHS OF EVIDENCE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Lake Beneath the Floor

The bullet struck Vanessa below the shoulder.

Daniel pulled her behind the stone altar as police entered from both sides of the church.

A second shot hit the wall.

The shooter fired from a building across the river, then disappeared before officers reached the location.

Paramedics treated Vanessa in an ambulance.

She remained conscious.

Daniel stood beside the open doors.

“What other way does Adrian have?”

Vanessa struggled to speak.

“He has Mrs. Gray.”

“Who is she?”

“Rachel’s voice double.”

Daniel remembered Noah saying the woman looked different but had Mommy’s voice.

“Why does he need someone who sounds like Rachel?”

“To access the key.”

“How?”

“Rachel built voice confirmation into the encryption.”

“Then a voice model could imitate her.”

“Not completely. She used emotional stress markers. Breathing patterns. Timing.”

“And Mrs. Gray can reproduce them?”

“She studied Rachel for eighteen months.”

A paramedic asked Daniel to step back.

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

“The woman’s real name is Evelyn Shaw.”

Daniel recognized it.

Evelyn had been Rachel’s graduate school roommate.

She attended their wedding.

She had disappeared from Rachel’s life after a dispute Daniel never understood.

“Why would Evelyn help them?”

“She believes Rachel stole Nightingale from her.”

The ambulance doors closed.

Detective Cole approached.

“We need to move.”

“The lake house is two hours away.”

“I’ve already requested aerial support.”

They traveled in an unmarked police vehicle.

Rain began falling as they left the city.

The old Mercer lake house had belonged to Daniel’s grandfather. After Charles retired, the family stopped using it.

Rachel loved the property.

She and Daniel married beneath an oak tree near the water.

They spent their first night as husband and wife in the house before leaving for their honeymoon.

When they arrived, the front gate stood open.

Fresh tire tracks marked the mud.

Detective Cole ordered Daniel to remain in the vehicle while officers searched the property.

He ignored her after hearing a scream from inside.

The front door had been forced open.

Furniture lay overturned.

Someone had removed the floorboards in the main bedroom.

Beneath them was an empty metal compartment.

A black cable ran from the compartment toward the lake.

“They found it,” Daniel said.

Detective Cole examined the mud.

“Maybe.”

Near the fireplace, Daniel found a drop of fresh blood.

Then another.

The trail led through the kitchen and out the rear door.

They followed it to the dock.

A small boat floated several yards offshore.

Its engine was off.

A woman stood inside.

Even in the rain, Daniel recognized Rachel.

She was thinner.

Her hair had been cut unevenly.

A scar crossed her jaw.

But she was alive.

“Rachel!”

She turned.

For one impossible moment, husband and wife stared at each other across the water.

Daniel stepped onto the dock.

Rachel raised a hand.

“Don’t come closer!”

Her voice sounded broken from disuse.

A man rose behind her.

Adrian Vale pressed a gun against her ribs.

Beside him stood a second woman.

Evelyn Shaw.

Her hair was blond now, but Daniel recognized her.

Evelyn held a silver device shaped like a narrow cylinder.

“The key,” Detective Cole said.

Adrian smiled.

“Not yet.”

He lifted a remote control.

The dock lights switched on.

Red dots appeared across Daniel’s chest and the officers’ bodies.

More gunmen were hidden in the trees.

Adrian called out, “Weapons on the ground.”

Detective Cole hesitated.

Rachel shouted, “Don’t do it!”

Adrian struck her.

Daniel moved forward.

The red dots shifted toward his head.

“Stop,” Detective Cole ordered.

She placed her weapon on the dock.

The officers followed.

Adrian nodded toward Evelyn.

She activated the silver device.

A female voice spoke from it.

Voice authorization required.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

When she spoke, Rachel’s voice emerged perfectly.

“Rachel Mercer. Initiate Orpheus recovery.”

The device emitted a warning tone.

Emotional signature rejected.

Evelyn’s face twisted.

Adrian pressed the gun harder against Rachel.

“Help her.”

Rachel laughed weakly.

“You can imitate my voice. You can’t imitate why I built it.”

Adrian looked toward Daniel.

“Then perhaps he can.”

The device spoke again.

Secondary authorization available.

Authorized user: Daniel Mercer.

Daniel stared at Rachel.

She shook her head.

Adrian aimed the gun at her heart.

“Say the words, Daniel.”

“What words?”

Rachel answered before Adrian could.

“Home is wherever you are.”

The private line from their wedding vows.

Daniel finally understood.

The key required both their voices.

May you like

Adrian smiled.

“Now we are all together.”
