Chapter 12 - Home Is Wherever You Are

Rain hammered the lake.
Daniel stood at the end of the dock with armed men hidden in the trees and his supposedly dead wife held at gunpoint before him.
Evelyn extended the silver device.
“Speak the authorization.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Her eyes carried a message he could not immediately understand.
Fear, yes.
But also calculation.
She was not simply waiting to be rescued.
She had planned for this moment.
“Why did you create the key?” Daniel asked.
Adrian sighed.
“This is not the time for a family discussion.”
“It won’t accept us unless the emotional signatures match.”
Evelyn looked at the device.
“He may be right.”
Daniel kept his eyes on Rachel.
“Why did you hide the cascade function?”
Rachel spoke carefully.
“Because Orpheus had already installed it.”
Charles had lied again.
Rachel had not created the vulnerability.
She discovered it.
“The original Nightingale design purified water,” she continued. “Orpheus modified the deployment firmware so every unit could receive a hidden command.”
“To contaminate the water,” Daniel said.
“To control access to it.”
Adrian smiled.
“Governments become cooperative when cities cannot drink.”
Detective Cole stood several steps behind Daniel.
Her hands were visible, but her eyes moved constantly, studying the trees, the boat, the distance to shore.
Daniel asked, “Why keep Rachel alive for eighteen months?”
“She encrypted the command network before we could use it,” Adrian said. “We needed the key.”
“You tortured her.”
“We persuaded her.”
Rachel’s expression revealed what that persuasion had involved.
Evelyn held the device closer.
“Speak.”
Daniel said nothing.
Adrian turned the gun toward the shore.
Toward Lily.
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
His daughter stood beside a police vehicle at the edge of the trees.
She should have been at the hospital.
An officer held her shoulders, appearing confused.
Then Daniel saw the officer’s gray gloves.
Not police.
One of Adrian’s people had brought her from the hospital.
Lily cried out.
“Daddy!”
Daniel stepped forward.
Adrian raised the remote.
“One command, and the man beside her fires.”
Detective Cole whispered, “Don’t.”
“What choice do I have?”
Rachel answered, “The choice we built.”
Daniel looked at her.
She glanced toward the lake.
Beneath the water, small lights flashed.
A cable ran from the empty compartment inside the house to the boat.
The silver cylinder was not the complete key.
The real system included something beneath the lake.
Daniel remembered their wedding night.
A storm had knocked out the house’s electricity.
Rachel joked that one day she would build a battery powerful enough to light the entire lake.
She had later installed an experimental energy storage unit beneath the dock.
The hidden compartment had contained a control relay.
The silver device was only an access terminal.
“Home is wherever you are,” Daniel said.
The device emitted a tone.
Secondary authorization accepted.
Evelyn smiled.
“Rachel,” Adrian ordered.
Rachel looked at Daniel.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then she repeated, “Home is wherever you are.”
Authorization complete.
The lake lights turned white.
The device spoke.
Select recovery mode.
Adrian said, “Full network control.”
The device responded.
Command denied. Founder override required.
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“Founder?”
Rachel looked toward the shore.
Charles Mercer emerged from the trees.
He stood without his wheelchair.
Daniel stared at him.
The stroke.
The weakness.
The trembling hands.
Another performance.
Charles carried a pistol.
“I told you,” he said, “no one controls Orpheus.”
Adrian aimed at him.
“You should have stayed at the estate.”
“You should have remembered who recruited you.”
Charles raised his left hand.
The gunmen in the trees shifted their aim.
Half pointed toward Adrian.
The others pointed toward Charles.
Two factions.
The alliance was breaking.
Charles looked at Daniel.
“Give me the terminal.”
“You did this to Rachel.”
“I prevented Vale from obtaining the network.”
“You destroyed my family.”
“I preserved something larger.”
“My children are not pieces in your strategy.”
“Everything is a piece in a strategy.”
Lily shouted again.
The false officer dragged her backward.
Charles fired.
The bullet struck the man’s leg.
Detective Cole ran toward Lily.
May you like
Gunfire erupted from the trees.
Daniel jumped into the water.
