Chapter 9 - The Woman Called Adelaide

Ethan turned off the chapel lights.

Claire remained behind the stone altar while Ortiz, who had followed in an unmarked police vehicle, called for support. Celeste clutched the ledger against her chest.

The chapel doors opened.

An elderly woman entered alone.

She wore a dark coat and carried no visible weapon. Her white hair was pinned neatly behind her head. A small Vale crest ring shone on her right hand.

Ethan recognized her from an old family portrait.

Adelaide Vale.

Richard’s aunt.

The family had been told Adelaide died in a private care facility twelve years earlier.

Celeste looked as though she had seen a ghost.

“You’re dead.”

Adelaide smiled.

“That story was useful.”

The men outside remained near the vehicles while Adelaide approached the altar.

She explained that A.V. did not refer to Amelia. It referred to her.

Adelaide had provided the first private investment for Northstar. She believed the technology could restore movement to people with severe injuries. When Harrow began falsifying outcomes, she attempted to withdraw her support.

Harrow threatened to reveal that early testing had occurred before full authorization.

Richard helped Adelaide disappear, believing her testimony would be safer if Harrow thought she was dead.

“Then why return now?” Ethan asked.

“Because Claire found what your father could not finish.”

Claire watched Adelaide carefully.

“You sent the bracelet.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened my daughter?”

“No.”

“The caller demanded the ledger.”

“Harrow’s people still want it.”

Adelaide claimed she had monitored the Northstar network from a distance. Mara’s disappearance and Claire’s pregnancy forced her to act. She contacted Mara anonymously and directed her to the wedding because it was the only place where Harrow, Celeste, the hospital board, the press, and independent witnesses would be gathered at once.

“You used a child to start a confrontation,” Ethan said.

“I told Mara to attend the wedding. Oliver approached Claire on his own.”

Mara confirmed that Adelaide’s message had never mentioned Oliver.

The boy had overheard his mother discussing Claire’s condition and recognized her from a foundation photograph.

Adelaide’s vehicles were not there to attack them. The drivers were former investigators who had spent years collecting evidence against Harrow.

Detective Ortiz did not trust the explanation.

“Give me one reason not to arrest you for concealing evidence.”

Adelaide held out both hands.

“Because the evidence you need is inside that ledger.”

The final pages listed every Northstar account.

Payments flowed through medical suppliers, rehabilitation charities, private insurers, and offshore trusts. Harrow received millions.

So did Raymond Cole.

Celeste received no direct payment, but foundation debts disappeared after each authorization she signed.

Richard’s name appeared beside several transactions marked REVERSED.

“He tried to return the money,” Adelaide explained. “He planned to expose everything.”

“Did Harrow kill him?” Ethan asked.

“I don’t know.”

Adelaide removed a photograph from her coat.

It showed Richard entering a small aircraft the day before the plane crash. Raymond Cole followed him.

A third man stood near the stairs.

Dr. Harrow.

The official passenger record listed Richard as traveling alone.

Claire looked at the ledger again.

A payment had been issued on the day of the crash.

The recipient was a company owned by Raymond Cole.

The description read: FINAL TRANSFER.

Detective Ortiz received a call from the officers guarding Harrow.

He had been released after his attorney challenged the basis of the arrest.

His car was found abandoned near the hospital.

Harrow had disappeared.

Ortiz looked toward the black vehicles.

“Does he know about this place?”

Adelaide’s expression became serious.

“He knows about every place Richard trusted.”

A window shattered at the back of the chapel.

Celeste collapsed to the floor.

For one terrible second, Claire believed she had been struck.

Then she saw the small dart embedded in Celeste’s coat.

A powerful sedative had been delivered through the window.

Ethan rushed toward his mother.

Outside, an engine accelerated.

Adelaide’s drivers followed the escaping vehicle.

Claire took the ledger from Celeste’s hands.

A folded paper fell from between the final pages.

May you like

It was a map of the Vale estate.

A red circle surrounded Claire’s nursery.
