Chapter 5 - The Scan Before Surgery

The wedding reception ended without music.

Amelia refused to allow Harrow’s removal to destroy the ceremony itself. She finished her first dance, cut the cake, and thanked the guests. Then she ordered the ballroom staff to close the adjoining library so Claire, Ethan, Mara, Celeste, and Detective Ortiz could speak privately.

Oliver remained with Amelia’s husband and two security officers outside.

Inside the library, Mara placed the leather folder on the table.

It contained copies of Claire’s original scans.

The first scan had been completed at St. Matthew’s Emergency Center, the nearest hospital to the crash. It showed swelling and trauma, but no complete interruption of the nerve pathways controlling Claire’s left leg.

A second scan had been taken after Claire was transferred to Vale Memorial Hospital.

That scan showed a small medical device positioned near the injured area.

Claire looked at Mara.

“What is that?”

“An experimental stabilization component,” Mara answered. “It was not listed in your surgical consent forms.”

Harrow folded his arms.

“This is an irresponsible interpretation by a therapist who is not qualified to evaluate surgical imaging.”

Mara opened the folder to another page.

“Then perhaps you can explain your signature authorizing the device.”

Harrow said nothing.

Ethan took the document.

The component had been manufactured by Northstar Clinical Solutions.

The same company receiving $480,000 each month from the Vale Foundation.

Claire felt as though the accident were happening again.

The impact.

The barrier.

The darkness.

Then waking to find a company she had been investigating had placed an unapproved device inside her body.

“You operated on me using Northstar equipment,” she said.

Harrow remained calm.

“The device saved your life.”

“Why was it hidden?”

“Emergency procedures require rapid decisions.”

“Why did you replace the original scan?”

“To prevent unqualified people from misreading it exactly as Mara is doing now.”

Detective Ortiz stepped closer.

“Why did the official surgical record list a different manufacturer?”

Harrow looked toward Celeste again.

This time, she met his eyes.

“Answer her,” Celeste said.

Harrow’s expression hardened.

“You approved the research funding.”

“I approved rehabilitation research. I did not approve secret devices.”

Claire watched Celeste carefully. Her shock appeared real, but Claire remembered the reflection in the photograph.

“You were inside the research wing the night Mara disappeared.”

Celeste’s posture stiffened.

Mara answered before she could.

“Mrs. Vale came because I called her.”

Everyone turned toward Mara.

She explained that after Claire moved her toe, Mara reviewed the earlier scans. She found the Northstar component and contacted Celeste, believing the foundation chair would protect a patient connected to the family.

Celeste arrived after midnight.

Harrow was already there.

“He told us the device was legal,” Mara said. “He said Claire had signed an emergency research authorization.”

“I never signed one,” Claire replied.

“I know that now.”

Mara had demanded the original consent form. Harrow refused. When she attempted to report the issue to the medical board, her system access was disabled.

Harrow threatened to destroy the Lane Pediatric Rehabilitation Program, which depended on grants from the Vale Foundation.

“He knew Oliver’s treatment was connected to the program,” Mara said. “He knew dozens of children could lose access if the funding disappeared.”

Celeste admitted that she had advised Mara to leave temporarily while she investigated.

“You told me to disappear,” Mara said.

“I told you to take Oliver somewhere safe.”

“You also told me not to contact Claire.”

“I believed Harrow when he said movement could damage the pregnancy.”

Claire felt anger rise.

“You believed him because believing him was convenient.”

Celeste lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

It was the first honest answer she had given.

Detective Ortiz collected the records, but she warned that the scans alone would not prove Harrow intentionally harmed Claire. The device might have been placed during a legitimate emergency, even if the paperwork had been altered afterward.

“We need the original authorization,” Ortiz said. “Or evidence that no authorization existed.”

Mara reached into the folder again.

“The original is stored in the hospital research archive.”

Harrow gave a quiet laugh.

“That archive was destroyed in a flood six months ago.”

Mara looked at Ethan.

“The paper archive was destroyed.”

“The digital archive?” he asked.

“Room 614.”

Ethan recognized the number.

Room 614 was inside the closed research wing.

Mara turned toward Claire.

“I tried to retrieve the records the night I vanished.”

“What stopped you?”

“Harrow wasn’t alone.”

She looked at Celeste.

“There was another person inside Room 614.”
