Chapter 15 - The Patient Who Was Never Counted

The photograph was analyzed by three independent experts.

None found evidence of digital alteration.

The paper had been manufactured less than two months earlier.

Richard Vale appeared older, thinner, and marked by a scar near his right temple, but Ethan recognized his father’s posture and the habit of holding his left hand inside his coat pocket.

Adelaide claimed she did not know the location.

Harrow laughed when Ortiz showed him the image.

“You finally received his invitation,” he said.

“To what?” Ortiz asked.

“The second program.”

Harrow refused to explain.

The mountain clinic in the photograph had no visible sign, and the landscape offered few identifying details. Investigators searched medical facilities across several states without finding a match.

The brass key carried a number.

17.

Claire thought immediately of the patient files.

Northstar had contained fifteen completed patients and one planned patient, Hope.

There should not have been a patient seventeen.

Mara examined the key beneath a magnifying lens. A faded symbol had been engraved beside the number.

It resembled the original Vale Foundation logo, but the center contained a small mountain instead of a medical cross.

Ethan searched his father’s old property records. One purchase had been made through a trust that never transferred into the Vale estate.

A mountain rehabilitation center called Haven Seventeen.

The property officially closed twenty-three years earlier.

No sale record existed.

Claire, Ethan, Mara, Oliver, and Detective Ortiz traveled to the region shown in the property documents. Hope remained safely with Amelia and her husband.

The road ended several miles below the clinic.

Snow covered the remaining path.

At the edge of the forest, they found a metal gate.

The brass key opened it.

Beyond the gate stood the same building shown in the photograph.

Smoke rose from a chimney.

Someone was inside.

Ortiz requested additional officers before they approached. The front door was unlocked.

The entrance hall contained no dust.

Fresh flowers stood beside the windows. Medical equipment hummed behind closed doors. A wall displayed photographs of patients learning to stand, walk, and use assisted devices.

None of the faces matched the Northstar files.

Mara studied the dates.

“These began before Harrow’s program.”

Claire moved closer.

Richard had not created Haven Seventeen after disappearing.

He had been involved with it before Northstar existed.

A light turned on at the end of the corridor.

Ethan called his father’s name.

No one answered.

They entered an office containing shelves of medical records.

On the desk was a letter addressed to Claire.

She opened it.

Claire,

If you are reading this, Harrow has fallen and Ethan knows enough to choose his own path.

Northstar was built from work stolen from this clinic. The original program was never designed to control patients. It was designed to find recovery where other institutions stopped looking.

I believed Harrow wanted the same thing.

That mistake cost lives.

But Harrow was not the person who changed the program.

He was the person who obeyed.

The final sentence had been underlined.

Inside the envelope was a list of seventeen patients.

The first sixteen names were unfamiliar.

Patient seventeen was Richard Vale.

His admission date was the day after the plane crash.

Ethan gripped the desk.

“My father was treated here.”

Mara turned to the final page.

Richard’s condition had been listed as severe memory loss following a head injury. Progress notes continued for almost nine years.

Then the entries stopped.

The last note was dated six weeks before Claire’s accident.

PATIENT 17 HAS RECOVERED THE NORTHSTAR MEMORY.

TRANSFER APPROVED BY DIRECTOR A.V.

Claire looked toward Adelaide.

“She said the initials belonged to her.”

Ethan picked up his phone.

Adelaide did not answer.

Detective Ortiz contacted the officers assigned to monitor her residence.

The house was empty.

Her vehicles were gone.

Inside the clinic office, a telephone began ringing.

It was an old landline with no visible connection to the wall.

Claire answered.

For several seconds, she heard only quiet breathing.

Then a man spoke.

His voice matched the recordings.

“Claire?”

Ethan moved closer.

Claire activated the speaker.

“Richard?”

The man did not answer the question.

“You should not have brought Ethan to Haven.”

“Where are you?”

“The woman you know as Adelaide is not my aunt.”

Ethan stared at the phone.

“Who is she?”

“She is the reason Northstar needed patients who could not speak for themselves.”

A door closed somewhere inside the clinic.

Ortiz drew her weapon and moved toward the corridor.

Richard’s voice became urgent.

“Listen carefully. Harrow’s trial was never the end. It was a test.”

“A test for what?” Claire asked.

“To see whether you would find me.”

Footsteps approached from the darkened hall.

Ethan stepped in front of Claire.

Mara moved beside her.

The door at the end of the corridor slowly opened.

A woman entered wearing a white medical coat and Celeste’s missing sapphire brooch.

Claire had seen her before.

She was the nurse who had slipped the photograph beneath Claire’s blanket months earlier.

The woman raised both empty hands.

“My name is not a name you will recognize,” she said.

“Then tell us why you’re here,” Ortiz ordered.

The woman looked at Claire.

“Because Patient 18 has been selected.”

Claire tightened her hands around the wheels of her chair.

“There is no Patient 18.”

The woman’s gaze moved toward Ethan.

“Yes,” she said quietly. “There is.”

The lights inside the clinic went out.

Richard shouted through the telephone.

“Ethan, do not let her touch you.”

A lock clicked behind them.

Then Ethan felt a sharp pain beneath his collar.

He reached back and pulled a small silver dart from his shoulder.

Claire caught him before he fell.

The woman in the white coat stepped backward into the darkness.

On the floor beside Ethan, a new medical bracelet glowed beneath the emergency lights.

PATIENT 18.

ETHAN VALE.

From somewhere deeper inside Haven Seventeen, a man began walking toward them.

His voice came through the darkness before his face appeared.

“Do you want to try?”
