Chapter 10 - The Empty Nursery
Ethan called the estate before they left Saint Anne’s.
No one answered.
The security system showed every camera offline.
Claire’s nurse had been scheduled to arrive at six. Ethan told her to stay away and contact the police.
They reached the estate with Detective Ortiz and four officers.
The front doors were open.
Nothing appeared stolen.
The nursery had been emptied.
The crib, clothing, medical supplies, and even the family photographs had been removed. A single hospital bassinet stood in the center of the room.
A Northstar logo had been placed on its side.
Inside was Claire’s missing financial notebook.
Someone had entered the estate repeatedly without being detected.
Ethan searched the room and found a tiny camera hidden inside a ceiling vent. The device contained recordings of Claire, Ethan, their nurses, and every conversation held in the nursery.
Harrow knew their routines.
He knew Claire’s due date.
He knew which hospital would receive her if complications occurred.
Claire opened her notebook.
Several new pages had been added.
They contained notes about her movement, medication, sleep, and blood pressure. The handwriting belonged to one of her private nurses.
Ethan checked the staff list.
The nurse had been recommended by Harrow.
“She has been monitoring me since I left the hospital,” Claire said.
The police searched the nurse’s apartment and found it empty. Her identification documents were false.
Celeste remained under observation after the sedative exposure. Before the doctors took her for further examination, she asked to speak with Claire alone.
Celeste struggled to meet her eyes.
“I brought Harrow into this family.”
“You also had years to remove him.”
“I thought I could control him.”
“People like Harrow survive because everyone believes they can control him.”
Celeste nodded.
She gave Claire complete legal authority over the Vale Foundation audit and signed a statement admitting her involvement in the original Northstar approvals.
It did not erase what she had done.
But it was the first step that cost her something real.
Ethan wanted Claire moved to a secure private residence.
Claire refused to run again.
Instead, she requested treatment at an independent hospital outside the Vale network. Mara arranged an evaluation with specialists who had no connection to Harrow or Northstar.
The new scans confirmed that the device near Claire’s injured nerves was creating unnecessary pressure.
The damage might not be permanent.
A corrective procedure could improve her chances of recovery, but because of her pregnancy, the medical team recommended waiting unless her condition became urgent.
For the first time, Claire received a plan based on her actual scans rather than Harrow’s altered records.
Mara began carefully supervised therapy.
Claire practiced the same movement Oliver had shown her in the ballroom.
Shoulder forward.
Weight to the stronger side.
Space for the knee.
Some days, her left leg responded.
Other days, it did not.
She learned to celebrate movement without treating silence as failure.
Meanwhile, Ortiz traced the hidden nursery camera to Raymond Cole. His accounts showed a flight booked under a false name.
The destination was a coastal town where Harrow owned an abandoned medical retreat.
Police searched the building.
They found Northstar equipment, forged patient files, and records showing plans to expand the program internationally.
Harrow was not there.
But Claire’s missing nurse was.
She surrendered and agreed to testify in exchange for protection.
Her real name was Rebecca Shaw.
She admitted that Harrow ordered her to monitor Claire and ensure she delivered at Vale Memorial Hospital. The unborn child had never been intended for a medical experiment.
The file was leverage.
Harrow planned to take temporary custody of the baby through a fabricated medical emergency and use the child to force Claire and Ethan to surrender the ledger.
“He said Mrs. Vale would give up anything for her daughter,” Rebecca told Ortiz.
She was right.
But Harrow had made one mistake.
Claire was no longer isolated.
Rebecca revealed that Harrow planned to meet Raymond Cole at a private airfield before leaving the country.
Police surrounded the airfield.
Raymond arrived alone.
He carried a passport, cash, and a bloodstained shirt.
When Ortiz asked where Harrow was, Raymond laughed.
“You’re still searching for the wrong man.”
“What does that mean?”
“Harrow didn’t create Northstar.”
“Then who did?”
