Chapter 11 - The Voice on the Airfield
Raymond claimed Richard Vale had survived the plane crash.
According to him, the accident had been staged so Richard could disappear with the Northstar ledger and escape criminal responsibility.
Ethan refused to believe it.
“My father left the ledger at Saint Anne’s.”
“After copying it,” Raymond said.
“Where is he?”
“Closer than you think.”
Detective Ortiz believed Raymond was attempting to create confusion, but Adelaide did not dismiss the claim.
Richard’s body had never been recovered. The aircraft’s emergency transmitter stopped working before the crash. Parts of the wreckage had been found, but the cockpit was missing.
Adelaide admitted that Richard once discussed disappearing until he could gather enough evidence against Harrow.
“He was afraid Harrow had people in law enforcement, the hospital, and the foundation,” she said.
“Did you help him?” Ethan asked.
“No. I told him abandoning his children would make him no better than the people he wanted to expose.”
Raymond refused to reveal anything else until he received immunity.
Ortiz denied the request.
While investigators searched the airfield, Claire examined the bloodstained shirt. The initials J.H. were stitched inside the collar.
The blood belonged to Harrow.
A trail led from the hangar toward the shoreline, where police found a damaged boat.
No body was recovered.
Raymond insisted Harrow had attacked him during an argument and escaped by boat. Ortiz suspected Raymond had killed him and attempted to destroy the evidence.
Without Harrow, many questions would remain unanswered.
Yet the ledger, patient files, Rebecca’s testimony, Mara’s records, and Celeste’s confession were enough to expose Northstar.
The Vale Foundation board removed Celeste as chair.
Ethan resigned his temporary board seat to prevent accusations that the family was controlling the investigation.
Claire was appointed independent administrator of a compensation fund for surviving Northstar patients.
Public reaction was immediate.
Some praised the Vale family for exposing the program.
Others accused them of hiding it for years.
Both were partly correct.
Claire refused all attempts to turn her into a symbol of forgiveness.
When journalists asked whether she forgave Celeste, Claire answered honestly.
“Accountability must come before forgiveness. Sometimes forgiveness never comes. Justice still has to.”
Two weeks later, Celeste entered court and pleaded guilty to falsifying foundation oversight reports and obstructing the original investigation.
She accepted responsibility without requesting protection for the Vale name.
Harrow and Richard were officially listed as missing.
Raymond remained in custody.
Claire’s due date approached.
Her movement continued to improve in small, unpredictable ways. She could activate several muscles in her left leg, though she still needed the wheelchair.
Ethan attended every therapy session.
He no longer hid information from her, even when the truth frightened him.
One evening after therapy, he placed Richard’s voicemail recorder on the table.
“There is another recording.”
Claire looked at him.
“You said you played everything.”
“I thought I did.”
A hidden file had appeared after the device was connected to a forensic computer. The recording was dated three days after Richard’s plane crash.
Ethan pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Richard’s voice spoke.
“If you are hearing this, I could not come home.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Richard continued.
“Ethan, do not believe anyone who says I ran to save myself. I left because Northstar had already chosen someone inside our family.”
There was a pause.
A second voice sounded in the background.
A child’s voice.
Amelia’s.
Richard lowered his tone.
“They are watching my daughter.”
The recording ended.
Ethan immediately called Amelia.
She did not answer.
