Chapter 2 - The Promise Ethan Broke

Ethan read the message three times.

His first reaction was anger.

His second was fear.

He asked Claire whether anyone else knew about Northstar. She told him she had not yet shared the complete findings, but her assistant knew she had been reviewing unusual medical payments.

Ethan photographed the message and called hospital security.

Within an hour, Dr. Harrow arrived with two attorneys.

Harrow examined the page and suggested it might have been written before the accident. Perhaps Claire had made herself a reminder and forgotten.

Claire stared at him.

“I didn’t threaten myself.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

“You implied it.”

Harrow’s calm expression never changed.

He explained that powerful medication, trauma, and interrupted sleep could affect memory. He recommended that Claire avoid stressful investigations until after the baby was born.

Ethan stepped between Harrow and the bed.

“My wife knows her own handwriting.”

“Of course.”

“And that isn’t it.”

Harrow looked at Celeste.

Celeste dismissed the attorneys and waited until only family remained.

Then she told Ethan that Claire’s investigation had to end.

“You saw what happened,” she said. “Whether the crash was connected or not, she cannot risk another threat.”

Claire expected Ethan to refuse.

Instead, he said nothing.

That silence frightened her more than Celeste’s command.

Later that evening, Ethan promised he would continue the investigation privately.

“You focus on getting stronger,” he said. “I’ll find out what Northstar is.”

“Together.”

“Claire.”

“Do not make decisions for me because I’m in this bed.”

“I’m trying to keep you alive.”

“And I’m trying to understand why someone nearly killed us.”

Ethan lowered his voice.

“I will tell you everything I find.”

It became the first promise he broke.

During the following weeks, Claire moved from the hospital to the Vale estate, where the ground floor had been redesigned for wheelchair access. Nurses arrived every morning. Therapists followed Harrow’s revised treatment plan. They stretched Claire’s legs and encouraged upper-body strength, but none allowed her to attempt the movement Mara had described.

Whenever Claire asked about nerve activation, they repeated the same phrase.

“The risk is greater than the benefit.”

Ethan spent longer hours away from home.

He claimed he was investigating Northstar, yet he shared no documents, names, or progress. When Claire asked direct questions, he said he needed more time.

Celeste visited almost daily.

She brought baby clothes, nursery plans, and lists of private nurses. She spoke of Claire’s future as though the wheelchair were permanent.

One afternoon, Claire overheard Celeste instructing a contractor to install a mechanical lift beside the bed.

Claire rolled into the hallway.

“Remove it.”

Celeste looked surprised.

“You may need it.”

“I don’t need it now.”

“You should prepare for reality.”

Claire placed both hands on the wheels of her chair.

“Reality is that I moved my toe.”

“Mara Lane made you believe something that was not medically supported.”

“How do you know what she told me?”

Celeste’s expression changed for only a second.

It was enough.

Claire followed her into the library.

“You spoke to Mara.”

“I speak to hospital employees.”

“Where is she?”

“She resigned.”

“Why?”

Celeste picked up her handbag.

“You are exhausted.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No, Claire. It is a warning. You are carrying my grandchild. Stop turning every kindness into a conspiracy.”

After Celeste left, Claire asked Ethan’s driver to take her to Vale Memorial Hospital.

The medical records department provided a copy of her file, but several pages were missing. The original scan completed after surgery had been replaced by a lower-resolution copy. Mara’s treatment plan was absent. The nursing log from the night Mara supposedly resigned had been restricted.

As Claire waited near the elevator, a young nurse slipped an envelope beneath the blanket over her knees.

“Don’t open it here,” the nurse whispered.

The elevator doors closed before Claire could ask her name.

Inside the envelope was a single photograph.

It showed Mara Lane entering Claire’s hospital room at 2:13 in the morning, several hours after she had supposedly left the building.

Mara was not alone.

Dr. Harrow walked behind her.

His hand was wrapped around her arm.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

SHE DID NOT RESIGN.
