Chapter 8 - The Hearing
The courtroom was smaller than Elena expected.
Ethan sat beside his attorney in a dark suit. Patricia occupied the row behind him, wearing pearls and an expression of injured dignity.
Elena entered with Margaret. She was still recovering, but she walked without assistance.
The hearing addressed possession of the house, protection of trust assets, and Ethan’s alleged fraud. Margaret presented the deed, the false agreement, financial records, security footage, and Ethan’s messages to the broker.
Then she played the threatening voicemail.
Ethan’s attorney argued that the words were spoken in frustration. He described the marriage as troubled and suggested Elena had misunderstood Ethan’s intentions.
Margaret presented the edited recordings beside the complete files recovered from the device.
The difference was unmistakable.
In the full version, Patricia insulted Elena for nearly fifteen minutes while Ethan remained silent. Elena’s supposed outburst was one sentence asking Patricia to leave the kitchen.
The judge turned to Ethan.
“Did you alter these recordings?”
Ethan hesitated.
That hesitation destroyed his defense.
The court confirmed Elena’s sole right to the property. Ethan and Patricia were ordered to remove their belongings under supervision. Ethan was prohibited from accessing trust accounts or presenting himself as an owner. The fraud investigation would continue separately.
Outside, Patricia rushed toward Elena.
“You ruined my son.”
Elena stopped.
“No. He built a trap and stepped into it.”
“You will regret being alone.”

“For eight years, I was alone in a crowded house,” she replied. “I think I will be fine.”
