Chapter 7 - Ethan’s Second Plan
The recording device revealed a second plan.
For months, Ethan had told friends that Elena was forgetful, emotional, and unable to manage the trust. He contacted a physician through a client and asked what evidence might be needed to question her mental capacity.
He also edited recordings of arguments with Patricia. Elena’s calm responses were removed, leaving fragments that made her sound confused and hostile.
His goal was not simply divorce.
He intended to ask a court to remove Elena as trustee and appoint himself to manage the property.
Margaret discovered a draft petition after a judge approved a forensic review of Ethan’s laptop.
“He was going to declare me incompetent?” Elena asked.
“He was preparing to try.”
“Why the divorce papers?”
“If you signed, he could say you understood the agreement. If you refused, he could portray the refusal as instability.”
Every cruel remark now appeared rehearsed. Every argument had been bait. Patricia’s insults were designed to provoke a reaction Ethan could record.
The truth was painful, but it ended Elena’s final illusion.
This was not a marriage damaged by misunderstanding.
It was a plan.
Ethan called the hospital repeatedly. His voicemails shifted from apology to accusation. First he said he had panicked. Then he blamed Patricia. Finally, his voice turned cold.
“You think you won because of one piece of paper. You have no idea what I can do.”
Elena played the message for Margaret.
“What do you want now?” Margaret asked.
Elena looked at the evidence bag and Rose’s photograph.
“I want the truth stated where he cannot edit it.”
