Chapter 2 - The Papers He Prepared

The divorce papers were not a surprise.
The timing was.
Elena had known for months that Ethan planned to leave. She had seen hotel charges and messages disappearing from his phone. She had heard him whisper late at night, promising someone that the house would soon belong to him.
Two weeks earlier, Elena found a draft agreement on his printer. It claimed Ethan had purchased the house before their marriage and that Elena had no ownership interest. It also said she would surrender any claim to savings, investments, and future support.
Every sentence was a lie.
The house had belonged to Elena’s grandmother, Rose Whitaker. Rose raised Elena after her parents died and left the property to her through a family trust. Ethan moved in after the wedding. His name was never added to the deed.
Yet at parties, he called it “our family home.” With contractors, he introduced himself as the owner. Slowly, he had turned Elena into a guest inside her own inheritance.
Now the false papers lay near her hand.
Ethan crouched, not to help, but to place a pen across the signature line.
“This is generous,” he said. “You keep your clothes, your account, and the car.”
“And the house?” Elena asked.
“The house stays with the Brooks family.”
Patricia folded her hands.
“Do not make this embarrassing. You have failed as a wife. Leave with dignity.”
Elena closed her fingers around the pen.

Ethan smiled.
Then she snapped it in half.
