Chapter 4 - The House Rose Built

As Elena zipped her coat, memories rose around her.
Rose bought the house after thirty years as a school principal. She restored every room herself. The kitchen had once been dark and narrow, but Rose opened the wall, added windows, and chose the long wooden table because she believed difficult conversations should happen in sunlight.
“This house is not wealth,” she once told Elena. “It is shelter. Never let anyone turn shelter into a weapon.”
After Rose died, Elena almost sold it. Then she met Ethan.
He was attentive in the beginning. He helped repair the garden gate, listened when Elena spoke about grief, and cooked breakfast on the anniversary of Rose’s death. He said he loved the house because it had shaped her.
After the wedding, admiration became possession.
He removed Rose’s photographs, moved Elena’s desk into a smaller room, and called every change an investment. Patricia gave away Rose’s china without permission and said marriage required Elena to make space for the husband’s family.
Elena made space until almost nothing of herself remained.
Now Patricia watched her put on the coat Rose had given her.
“You look ridiculous,” Patricia said. “Where are you going?”
“Nowhere.”
Ethan glanced at the door. “Then take off the coat and sign.”
Elena faced him.

“I am not leaving. I am preparing for the door to open.”
The doorbell rang.
