Chapter 5 - The Notice
Margaret entered first, carrying a black leather case. Behind her stood the process server and a locksmith.
Ethan moved toward them.
“This is a private family matter.”
Margaret looked past him. “Elena, are you all right?”
Elena nodded, though the room swayed.
The process server handed Ethan the notice.
“You have been served.”
Ethan read the document. Each line removed another layer of confidence.
His permission to occupy the property had been revoked. The house belonged solely to Elena’s trust. Because he had attempted to gain control through false representations, emergency possession proceedings had begun.
“This is nonsense,” he said. “We are married.”
“Marriage does not transfer ownership,” Margaret replied.
Patricia grabbed the papers.
“My son paid for this house.”
Margaret produced a certified deed.
“The Whitaker Family Trust owns it. Elena is the sole beneficiary and acting trustee.”
Ethan turned toward Elena.
“You went behind my back.”
Elena looked at the agreement on the floor.
“You tried to make me sign lies while I was sick.”
“You are confused. You have a fever.”
Margaret stepped beside her.
“She was clear enough to preserve security recordings, financial statements, and your messages to a real estate broker.”
For the first time, Ethan looked afraid.
Patricia stared at him. “What broker?”
“The one he promised could sell the house after I signed,” Elena said.
Emergency medical technicians entered through the side door.
Elena leaned against Margaret.

Then her strength gave out.
