Chapter 9 - the evidence that named evelyn
Detective Nolan Pierce entered the ballroom with four officers.
He carried a sealed evidence bag containing a silver bracelet.
Evelyn recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to Elise.
Pierce read from a warrant.
“Evelyn Hart, you are being detained in connection with newly obtained evidence related to the death of Elise Hawthorne.”
Sophie gripped Evelyn’s hand.
“No.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“On what basis?”
“An audio recording, a witness statement, and physical evidence recovered from Ms. Hart’s former residence.”
“I sold that residence five years ago,” Evelyn said.
“The current owner discovered a locked box during renovations.”
Adrian stood beside the altar, watching with quiet satisfaction.
Evelyn understood the timing.
The evidence had not merely appeared.
It had been released the moment Celeste canceled the wedding.
Pierce showed Evelyn a photograph of the locked box.
Inside were Elise’s bracelet, a duplicate car key, and printed messages showing Evelyn threatening to take Sophie.
The messages were false.
But they were convincing.
Marianne placed a hand against her chest.
“This cannot be happening.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Your performance needs work.”
Pierce began guiding Evelyn toward the exit.
Sophie refused to release her.
“You can’t take her.”
Margaret knelt beside the child.
“I will stay with you.”
“No. They want Aunt Evelyn gone.”
The officers paused.
Sophie turned toward Pierce.
“Did you watch the full camera recording?”
“What recording?”
“The one where Mommy was in the garage.”
Evelyn tried to stop her.
“Sophie.”
But Sophie continued.
“A man touched her car. He had a Blackwood badge.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Pierce looked toward him.
“What is she talking about?”
Adrian answered smoothly.
“A child repeating a story she heard tonight.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“The Bellmere archive contained footage from the night Elise died.”
“Contained?”
“Someone attempted to delete it.”
Pierce’s attention shifted from Evelyn to Marcus.
“Where is the footage now?”
Evelyn removed the memory card from the lining of her sleeve.
She had kept it hidden even after the ballroom blackout.
“Here.”
Preston’s voice came through the ballroom speakers.
“Do not give him that card.”
Everyone looked upward.
Preston was somewhere inside the hotel’s communication system.
His breathing was uneven.
“The detective is part of it.”
Pierce drew his weapon but kept it lowered.
“Preston, identify your location.”
“No.”
“You are wanted for questioning.”
“If I come out, Marianne will trigger the final transfer.”
Marianne looked toward the ceiling.
“You have lost your mind.”
Preston laughed.
“You said the same thing about Elise.”
A murmur moved through the guests.
Pierce ordered officers to search the hotel.
Preston continued.
“Evelyn, the recording they gave police is real, but the order of the sentences was changed. Elise called you because she discovered someone had been using Sophie’s future shares as collateral.”
“Who?”
“Arthur Hawthorne.”
Evelyn stared at Marcus.
Her father had created the trust to protect Sophie.
Why would he use it as collateral?
Preston’s voice weakened.
“The trust is not what Margaret thinks it is. The document in the vault was replaced years ago.”
Margaret looked at the clock.
Two hours and fifty-four minutes remained.
“Where is the original?” she asked.
“In the room beneath the ballroom.”
Arthur’s letter had mentioned evidence stored beneath the Bellmere.
Preston gave them a code.
“Take the service elevator to level B4. Use Arthur’s key. But do not let Adrian follow you.”
Adrian stepped away from the altar.
Pierce ordered two officers to block him.
The ballroom speakers crackled.
Preston whispered one final sentence.

“The person who killed Elise is already in the room beneath you.”
Then the connection died.
