Chapter 15 - the face on the second recording

By sunrise, the Grand Bellmere Hotel was surrounded by investigators, reporters, and emergency vehicles.

The wedding guests had been released after giving statements.

Videos of Preston accusing Sophie had already spread across social media. A second video showed Celeste dropping her engagement ring and ending the wedding.

The public believed they understood the story.

A wealthy groom had tried to seize a family trust.

A child had been framed.

A bride had discovered the truth.

But Evelyn knew the public had only seen the smallest part.

She and Sophie returned to the ballroom with Margaret, Celeste, Lydia, and Marcus.

The chandeliers were dark.

Broken glasses had been cleared away, but the wooden menu board remained on the marble where Preston had dropped it.

Sophie walked toward it.

Evelyn stopped her.

“You don’t need to look at that.”

“I’m not scared of it anymore.”

She picked up the board and turned it over.

A small memory card had been taped beneath the wooden frame.

Marcus stepped forward.

“That was not there during the confrontation.”

Sophie removed it.

“Someone put it here when the lights went out.”

The ballroom cameras had captured every entrance and exit, but the footage from the blackout showed only shadows.

Margaret inserted the card into a secure laptop.

One video file appeared.

Its date was the day before Elise died.

The recording showed Arthur Hawthorne sitting inside the hidden archive beneath the ballroom.

He looked older and more tired than Evelyn remembered.

Elise sat beside him.

She was alive, frightened, and holding a sleeping two-year-old Sophie.

Arthur looked directly into the camera.

“If Evelyn sees this, then the wedding transfer failed.”

Evelyn gripped the edge of the table.

Her father continued.

“The public trust documents name Sophie as Elise’s daughter and future heir. That information is incomplete.”

Sophie looked up at Evelyn.

“What does he mean?”

“I don’t know.”

On the recording, Elise began crying.

Arthur placed a folder in front of the camera.

A medical symbol was printed across it.

“The Blackwood family believes Sophie inherited access to the Hawthorne medical network,” Arthur said. “Marianne believes the same. Both are wrong.”

The video flickered.

Someone had damaged the middle section.

When the image returned, Arthur was standing.

“The child must never be tested inside a Hawthorne facility. Her identity must never be compared with the original project records. If that happens, the people who created her will know she survived.”

Evelyn stopped the video.

No one spoke.

Sophie looked from one adult to another.

“Created me?”

Celeste covered her mouth.

Lydia turned toward Marcus.

“You knew about the project.”

Marcus did not deny it.

Evelyn moved between him and Sophie.

“What project?”

Marcus looked toward the ballroom entrance.

The security camera above the door had stopped blinking.

A phone began ringing inside the wooden menu board.

Sophie lifted it before Evelyn could stop her.

It was not Preston’s phone.

It was an older device hidden beneath a second wooden panel.

The screen displayed a live video call.

A man sat in a dark room.

Only the lower half of his face was visible.

“Put Arthur’s daughter on the phone,” he said.

Evelyn took the device.

“Who are you?”

The man ignored the question.

“Did Marcus activate the founder authority at midnight?”

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“Yes.”

“Then they know where you are.”

“Who knows?”

The man leaned closer to the camera.

Behind him, a wall of monitors displayed live footage from the Bellmere ballroom.

One screen showed Evelyn.

One showed Sophie.

A third showed a hospital room.

Inside that room, a woman lay sleeping beneath white blankets.

The camera angle shifted.

Her face became visible.

Evelyn dropped the phone onto the table.

The woman had Elise’s face.

Sophie stared at the screen.

“Mommy?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Lydia whispered, “That cannot be her.”

The man on the phone continued.

“Arthur kept Elise alive because she was the only person who knew Sophie’s real identity. Adrian’s wedding was never the final transfer. It was designed to force Marcus to reveal himself.”

Evelyn picked up the phone again.

“Where is my sister?”

“You will receive instructions.”

“No. You tell me now.”

The man smiled.

“First, ask Marcus what he did with Arthur Hawthorne.”

Every person in the ballroom turned toward the security manager.

Marcus slowly reached inside his jacket.

Evelyn expected a weapon.

Instead, he removed a sealed black envelope.

Arthur’s handwriting appeared across the front.

For Sophie, after Evelyn learns the truth.

Marcus placed the envelope on the table.

“I was ordered never to open this,” he said.

Sophie touched it.

A heavy metallic sound echoed through the empty ballroom.

The main doors had locked.

All the cameras turned toward them at the same time.

The man on the phone spoke one final sentence.

“The wedding was only the invitation.”

The video call ended.

Above the ballroom entrance, the security light changed from red to black.

Then someone knocked three times from the other side of the locked door.
