Chapter 6 - the bride’s locked room

When Evelyn returned to the Bellmere, the hotel was in chaos.
Celeste had disappeared.
Her wedding gown remained in the bridal suite, but the bride was gone. Adrian claimed she needed privacy. Marianne ordered the staff to continue preparations.
Preston had returned before Evelyn.
He acted as though their meeting at mile marker 27 had never happened.
Margaret met Evelyn near the elevators.
“You left Sophie without telling me.”
“She was safer with you.”
“That depends on who is watching my suite.”
Evelyn showed her Arthur’s letter.
Margaret read it in silence.
“One of the brides will betray the others,” she said.
“Was my father married before my mother?”
“Twice before.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“I was told Marianne was his second wife.”
“That is what the public record says.”
“What does the private record say?”
Margaret glanced toward the security camera.
“Arthur’s first marriage was annulled. His second wife vanished before Evelyn was born.”
“I am Evelyn.”
Margaret closed her eyes briefly.
“Your father named you after her.”
Before Evelyn could ask more, Sophie ran toward them.
She held a bouquet of white roses.
“I found Celeste.”
“Where?”
“In the locked bridal room.”
Sophie led them through a corridor behind the ballroom.
At the end stood a private dressing room guarded by one of Marianne’s assistants.
Evelyn ordered the woman to move.
“The bride requested privacy.”
“The bride is my sister.”
“She specifically said you were not to enter.”
Sophie pointed to the air vent near the floor.
“She was crying.”
Evelyn used Arthur’s brass key.
The lock opened.
Celeste sat on the floor beside the wedding gown.
Her makeup had been removed. Her hair hung loose around her face. Without the photographers and jewelry, she looked less like an heiress and more like the frightened child Evelyn remembered.
Celeste stared at the key.
“Father gave you access.”
“He gave me a warning.”
Celeste looked toward Margaret.
“You should not be here.”
“Neither should the document Marianne forced you to sign,” Margaret replied.
Celeste began trembling.
Evelyn shut the door.
“What did you sign?”
“A marriage agreement.”
“What else?”
Celeste shook her head.
Sophie walked closer.
“Did you put the note in my music box?”
Celeste looked at her.
“No.”
“Did you call our room with my mommy’s voice?”
“No.”
“Did you tell Preston to add a pocket to my jacket?”
Celeste’s face changed.
“What pocket?”
Evelyn sat beside her.
“Someone plans to put Preston’s phone in Sophie’s jacket. Then they will pressure me to sign an admission that makes me an unfit trustee.”
Celeste covered her mouth.
“Adrian told me Sophie had been taking things.”
“Before she arrived?”
Celeste nodded.
“He said the family had medical reports.”
“There are no reports.”
Celeste looked toward her wedding gown.
“Then the contract is based on fraud.”
“What contract?”
“If you are removed as trustee before midnight, my marriage agreement places Sophie’s voting shares under Adrian’s temporary management.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“That clause would be illegal.”
“Not if Evelyn signs voluntarily.”
The entire plan became clear.
The staged theft.
The public humiliation.
The confession prepared in advance.
Adrian did not need a court to remove Evelyn. He needed her signature.
Celeste stood.
“I have to cancel the wedding.”
The locked door opened.
Adrian entered.
He held no key.
Preston stood behind him.
Adrian looked at Celeste with disappointment rather than anger.
“We agreed there would be no more private conversations.”
Celeste stepped away from him.
“I know about Sophie’s jacket.”
Adrian smiled.
“Children’s clothing is hardly a reason to cancel a wedding.”
“You lied about her medical history.”
“I repeated what your mother told me.”
Marianne appeared in the corridor.
“I told him what Elise’s doctors told me.”
Evelyn moved between Marianne and Sophie.
“Elise never gave you access to her doctors.”
“She was my daughter.”
“She hated you.”
Marianne’s expression became cold.
“She hated anyone who tried to control her impulses.”
Celeste removed the engagement ring from her finger.
“I am ending this.”
Adrian caught her wrist before she could drop the ring.
The movement was controlled but unmistakably threatening.
“No,” he said quietly. “You are completing what your father started.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
Preston moved between them.
Adrian released Celeste.
His pleasant smile returned.
“The wedding proceeds tomorrow. Sophie carries the flowers. Evelyn signs the family acknowledgment. Everyone receives what Arthur intended.”
“And if we refuse?” Evelyn asked.
Adrian looked at Sophie.
“Then the police will receive new evidence concerning Elise’s death.”
“What evidence?”
“A recording of Evelyn arguing with her sister two hours before the crash.”
Evelyn felt the blood leave her face.
She had argued with Elise that night.
No one outside the family knew.
Adrian continued.
“The recording makes it sound as though Evelyn threatened to take Sophie away.”
“You altered it.”
“Can you prove that?”
He looked toward the camera above the door.
“Evidence is only useful when people trust the person presenting it.”
After Adrian left, Celeste opened her hand.
A small black device rested in her palm.
She had pulled it from his jacket while he held her wrist.
It was a remote control.
One button was marked ballroom cameras.
