Chapter 8 - you should have checked the cctv

The accusation unfolded exactly as the anonymous message predicted.

Preston searched the tables.

Adrian ordered the musicians to stop.

Marianne demanded that the hotel lock every exit.

Then Preston approached Sophie.

“Empty your pockets.”

Sophie looked toward Evelyn.

“She is a child,” Evelyn said. “You do not search her.”

Preston called a female security officer.

The officer reached into Sophie’s jacket and removed the phone.

The guests reacted instantly.

Whispers spread across the marble ballroom.

Celeste closed her eyes.

Adrian placed one arm around her, performing concern for the cameras.

Preston raised the wooden menu board.

“That’s what happens when you raise a thief!”

Sophie backed away.

Evelyn rushed forward and pulled her behind her.

“She never touched your phone.”

“I found it in her pocket. Everyone saw.”

Then Evelyn looked toward the camera above the entrance.

“You should have checked the CCTV.”

Marcus Reed entered with the tablet.

The footage played.

Preston prepared the phone.

A black-gloved figure placed it into Sophie’s pocket.

The figure stood beside the bride.

Marcus began to identify the person.

Then the lights went out.

In the darkness, someone collided with Marcus and took the tablet.

Preston disappeared through the service corridor.

When emergency lighting returned, Evelyn saw Adrian standing beside Celeste without his right glove.

The bride was smiling.

But it was not a smile of victory.

It was the smile Celeste used whenever she was terrified and determined not to cry.

She stepped away from Adrian.

“You put it in her pocket,” she said.

Adrian stared at her.

“Be careful.”

Celeste pulled the miniature audio recorder from Sophie’s jacket.

“Evelyn told me about the second pocket.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

The recorder had captured the movement, Preston’s accusation, and Adrian’s whispered words as he returned to the altar.

It’s done. Make her sign before midnight.

Celeste held up the device.

“You used my signature to alter Sophie’s dress.”

Marianne walked toward her daughter.

“Give me the recorder.”

“No.”

“Celeste.”

“For once, Mother, you don’t get to tell me what happened while I was standing in the room.”

The ballroom doors locked automatically.

Guests became anxious.

Marcus touched his earpiece.

“Someone activated the security containment protocol.”

“Who has authority?” Evelyn asked.

“Hotel management, myself, and the Hawthorne event director.”

Every head turned toward Marianne.

She remained perfectly calm.

“This wedding has suffered a misunderstanding. No one leaves until the family resolves it privately.”

Evelyn faced the guests.

“A child was framed for theft so I could be forced to surrender control of her inheritance.”

Marianne’s composure cracked.

“You have no right to discuss trust matters publicly.”

“You made the accusation public.”

Margaret Shaw entered from the rear corridor carrying a duplicate of the trust summary.

She raised her voice.

“At midnight, control of the Hawthorne Legacy Trust will transfer unless the attempted fraud is formally documented.”

Adrian looked at the clock.

Three hours and twenty-one minutes remained.

He stepped away from Celeste.

“This is becoming ridiculous.”

Celeste removed her engagement ring.

“No. It is becoming clear.”

She dropped the ring onto the marble floor.

The sound was small, but it carried through the silent ballroom.

“The wedding is over.”

Several guests began recording with their phones.

Adrian bent and picked up the ring.

“You think walking away protects you?”

“It protects me from becoming your wife.”

He leaned close enough that only Celeste, Evelyn, and Sophie heard him.

“If this marriage does not happen, the original recording of Elise goes to the police.”

Evelyn answered.

“Send it.”

Adrian smiled.

“I already did.”

Sirens sounded outside the hotel.

Not one police car.

Several.

Marcus checked his security monitor.

“They are not coming for Adrian.”

“Who are they coming for?” Sophie asked.

May you like

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“You.”
