Chapter 13 - what preston finally confessed

Adrian’s control collapsed quickly after Sophie refused him.
The attorney general’s investigators surrounded the altar.
Celeste pulled free while Adrian looked toward the doors.
Pierce seized the remote.
Marianne attempted to leave through the sacristy, but Lydia blocked her path.
Preston stepped into the aisle.
Adrian stared at him.
“You brought them here.”
“You threatened my child.”
“I protected your career.”
“You used my career to turn me into your servant.”
Adrian’s expression remained cold.
“You planted the phone.”
“Because you ordered me to.”
“You approached the child with the board.”
“Because Marianne said Evelyn would only sign if Sophie believed she was in danger.”
Marianne spoke sharply.
“Do not say another word.”
Preston faced the investigators.
“I prepared the false phone evidence. I copied Margaret Shaw’s access card. I paid the seamstress to alter Sophie’s jacket. I also arranged the blackout in the ballroom.”
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“You said Adrian controlled the cameras.”
“He controlled the lights,” Marcus replied. “The cameras continued recording.”
Preston continued his confession.
“I did not tamper with Elise’s car. I was nineteen when she died. Adrian told me our family had nothing to do with it.”
“Who ordered the mechanic?” Pierce asked.
Preston looked toward Marianne.
“She did.”
Marianne’s voice became icy.
“You have no proof.”
Preston removed a small device from inside his cuff.
“A recording from mile marker 27.”
Evelyn remembered the black SUV.
Preston had known someone was listening.
The audio played.
Marianne’s voice filled the chapel.
Make Evelyn sign. If she refuses, release the edited recording and take the child.
A second voice answered.
It did not belong to Preston.
It belonged to Adrian.
And if Celeste cancels?
Marianne replied.
Then she dies like Elise.
Celeste closed her eyes.
Adrian said nothing.
The attorney general ordered both of them detained.
Marianne looked at Evelyn.
“You think this makes you the winner?”
“This was never a game.”
“It was always a game. Arthur designed it that way.”
Lydia moved closer.
“No. Arthur designed a cage. You were simply arrogant enough to step inside.”
Investigators placed restraints on Adrian.
He turned toward Celeste.
“You cannot control the company without me.”
Celeste removed the remaining wedding jewelry and placed it on the altar.
“I would rather lose every dollar than spend another minute believing you loved me.”
Adrian was taken outside.
Marianne remained near the altar.
She looked at Sophie with an expression Evelyn could not understand.
Not hatred.
Recognition.
“You have Elise’s eyes,” Marianne said.
Sophie moved closer to Evelyn.
Marianne smiled faintly.
“That is why Arthur chose you.”
“Chose her for what?” Evelyn asked.
Marianne looked toward Marcus.
“He still hasn’t told you.”
Marcus remained silent.
The chapel clock showed eleven fifty-one.
Margaret opened the original trust document.
“We have nine minutes to file an emergency suspension of the transfer.”
The attorney general prepared a secure connection to the state registry.
Lydia placed Arthur’s brass key into a small slot beneath the chapel altar.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a biometric scanner.
The screen displayed four names.
Elise Hawthorne.
Evelyn Hart.
Celeste Hawthorne.
Sophie Hart.
Elise’s name was marked active.
Everyone stared at the screen.
“That is impossible,” Evelyn whispered.
Margaret checked the original document.
“The trust system still recognizes Elise as alive.”
Marianne began laughing.
It was the first honest sound she had made all night.
“You never understood the real transfer.”
“What real transfer?” Celeste demanded.
Marianne looked at the clock.
Eight minutes remained.
“At midnight, the trust does not pass to the bride.”
May you like
She turned toward Sophie.
“It passes to the person the system believes is Elise Hawthorne.”
